When my airplane landed, it was nearly midnight, but the sun was shining. Dazzling ice stretched out before me. I was at the bottom of the world, Antarctica.

The air was icy cold - so cold that it stung my nose to breathe. In the distance I saw towering ice-crusted mountains. One mountain had steam drifting upward from its peak. It was an active volcano!

As I headed for McMurdo Station, a U.S. research center, I spotted a lonely emperor penguin. Just like me, he would be working through the harshest winter on Earth.

McMurdo Station will be my home for the next months. I will spend a cold, dark winter here. The Antarctic winter begins in June and lasts through September. The sun never rises, and temperatures sink as low as -65℉.

Every year as winter approaches, emperor penguins return to Antarctica from the sea. Females lay eggs and then head out to sea to rest and eat. Emperors are the only penguins that lay their eggs in the bitter cold winter.

For nine weeks, the males do nothing but protect the eggs. They don’t even eat. To keep an egg from freezing, an emperor dad balances it on his feet, tucked snugly under his fat stomach. Later in the winter, the female penguins return to their families.

Come springtime, I'll be watching for the emperor penguins--and their fuzzy young chicks-as they head out to sea for a season of fish dinners.

It is contrary to popular belief that the Marathon race was not one of the events included in the Ancient Olympic program. Actually, the long-distance road race we now know as the Marathon was first introduced in the Modern Olympic Games of 1896 in Athens, although the long-distance race is in fact in memory of the heroic run of Phidippides, a brave soldier.

There are several versions of this legend. According to one of them, Phidippides ran a grueling 250 kilometers in two days, mostly over uneven mountainous terrain. The Persian army had landed at Marathon and the small Athenian army was in urgent need of help. Phidippides, the Greek's best runner, was sent to request backup from the Spartans, 225 kilometers (140 miles) away.

Unfortunately the Spartans' religion dictated that they could not send their army to battle until the moon was full, so Phidippides had to run back to Athens the next day (another 225 kilometers!) to deliver the bad news. The Athenian army received no help, so they had to set off immediately to Marathon by themselves and fought bravely, eventually defeating the Persians.

Phiddipides was then sent from the Marathon battlefield back to Athens to announce the victory. Despite the punishing days of running and fighting he had endured, our hero rose to the challenge, delivering the victorious message at Athens with his last breath. After this, Phiddipides died from sheer exhaustion, having surpassed the limits of human endurance. The distance between Marathon and Athens is approximately 42 kilometers, or 26.2 miles, the modern distance for the modern Marathon race that now commemorates Phiddipides' feat.

There are many misconceptions about alcoholism in the United States. For example, many people think that alcoholics are careless, pleasure-seeking people who have moral problems that make them easier prey for liquor. Actually, alcoholics often feel guilty about their drinking and are very self-conscious around other people. Alcoholics quite often have a low self esteem and are sensitive about what people may think of them. Another common myth is that the alcoholics are always drunk, but it is not true. In fact, there are three types of alcoholics. Episodic drinkers, for instance, drink only now and then, but each of their

drinking episodes ends in overindulgence. Habitual excess drinkers are also only
