HKUST Students Compete for

Excellence

in Technical

Communication

Language experts at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology believe that competition can propel better performance. To encourage the acquisition of communication skills, the Language Centre at HKUST will hold a competition on 16 June (Friday) in which students will compete for awards by demonstrating the skills required of a technical professional.

The contestants are four teams of students selected from the 380 undergraduates who have taken a credit-bearing Technical Communication course organised by the Language Centre this year. Since 1992, HKUST’s Language Centre has offered this course to second- and third-year Science and Engineering undergraduates with the aim of enhancing their confidence and ability to present their technical work in English.

“Engineers in the United Kingdom and the United States are required to take at least one course on technical communication before they are chartered,” says Mr Anthony K.K. Tong, Senior Instructor at the Language Centre, who is in charge of the course. “Thus, to meet the competition, preparation of this kind is extremely helpful to our students when they reach the workplace after graduation.”

Effective written reports and oral presentations are given equal emphasis in the 15-week course. Students learn questionnaire and survey design, various types of report writing, including proposals and memos, and communication skills applicable to job interviews and group presentations.

The event will be sponsored by the Motorola Semiconductors Hong Kong, Ltd.

Note to Editors:

You are welcome to send representative(s) to cover the event. The competition will take place at the Chen Kuan Cheng Forum (Lecture Theatre H) from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
