Text 1
M: OK, class, listen to me. Please be seated, and open your textbooks. Read Chapter Two and you’ve got five questions to answer at the end of the class.
W: Mr. Smith, can we work in groups again?
Text 2
M: Which jacket did you finally buy at the store?
W: Well, the red one looked so wonderful, but it would cost me 80 dollars. I thought it was a little expensive. I had only 70 dollars. So I bought the blue one instead and it saved me 20 dollars.
Text 3
W: I forgot to tell you that Fred called yesterday to borrow your sleeping bag.
M: Oh, I’m sorry. I’ve lent mine to Jack. But you can tell him to call Tom. His sleeping bag is available.
Text 4
W: My boss keeps on piling up the work on my desk. I’m doing the work of three people!
M: Yeah, since Kevin left, we’ve all got stuck with extra tasks. But I’ve heard his replacement will be here on Monday morning, so we shouldn’t have to deal with this for too much longer.
Text 5
M: Hello. I’d like to check out this book, please. Here’s my student ID.
W: Oh, I’m sorry, young man. But this is our only copy of this book, so you can’t take it away, but you can read it here or make copies of whatever pages you need.
Text 6
W: Dad, I like these shoes very much.
M: Are you joking? Those shoes are over 200 dollars! Too expensive. W: But they are so popular nowadays. All the cool girls at school have them!
M: Well, look at the high heels. They must be around five inches tall. You’d never be able to walk in shoes like that.
W: High heels are fashionable right now. Uncle Tom bought a pair for Samantha! I’ll do extra chores at home.
M: Do you know how many chores you’d have to do to afford those? W: I’ll also work hard at lessons and get all A’s.
M: Ok. Don’t let me down. Text 7
M: Room service, how can I help you?
W: I’d like to order some breakfast for Room 301, please. I see that you have some specials today. M: Yes. We always offer a special on weekends. Today, we have French-style pancakes served
with smoked bacon and an American-style breakfast sandwich. W: Ooh, the second one sounds good. Can you tell me more about that one?
M: Certainly. We take two eggs, and we add cheese, sausage, and serve everything on a fresh homemade biscuit.
W: Tell me more about your biscuits.
M: Ours are a bit sweet. They are soft in the middle and a little hard on the outside. They’re great on their own, but they’re even better as part of the sandwich.
W: OK, I’m sold! We’ll take two of those and a pot of coffee, please. M: Coming right up!
Text 8
W: There sure is a lot of pressure on people to have a foreign name, don’t you agree?
M: I’m not sure. Many people don’t use foreign names, even when they go abroad or meet foreigners.
W: Yes, but many internationally famous actors, writers, and painters do have pressure. Some of them feel they won’t be successful abroad if they use their regular names.
M: What does it matter? What’s in a name, anyway?
W: Names are important, and I feel people are turning their backs on their culture when they take a foreign name.
M: I don’t think so. Names to me are things that are just on the surface. I use a foreign name in my English class just for the sake of convenience. When speaking to people in another language, it’s simpler to use a name that belongs to that language.
W: Maybe you’re right, but I still feel the way I do. Text 9
W: Why are we down in the dark room again?
M: We’re looking for a box marked “Christmas decorations”.
W: I don’t like cold, dark places. I feel like I’m in a scary movie. Also, I hate rats. M: What’s wrong with rats?
W: They are dirty creatures that spread disease.
M: I don’t see them that way. They’re like us. They are very social, and they get sad when they’re alone.
W: You’re strange. Hey, is that the box on the shelf? M: No, those are the Halloween decorations.
W: Ah! I just walked right into a spider web! It’s dangerous here.
M: It doesn’t matter. You know even though almost all spiders have poison, less than one percent are harmful to humans.
W: Whatever! I don’t like spiders at all.
M: There the box is, under that bench. Can you hand me that pole by the ladder? I can use it to drag the box out.
W: Here you are. I’ll stand on this chair until you’re ready to go upstairs to the living room. M: Don’t worry. There are hardly any spiders down here. Trust me.
Text 10
In large public American universities, many students will find themselves in classes that are taught not by professors, or even by assistant professors, but by graduate students. This is less true for beginning courses that cover a lot of materials and often have several hundred students; these classes require the experience of a professor. But for courses that are more for fun, like photography and classes about pop culture, as well as smaller classes that are more specialized, the university doesn’t want to waste the valuable time of the professor. Because graduate school is much more expensive than regular college, graduate students often pay their way through school by teaching these types of classes. In other words, they do earn some money for their work, but it’s not really the main reason to do it. It gives them experience leading a classroom. Some parents look down on universities that use graduate students to teach the most important courses across many fields. Considering how much school fees continue to rise each year, these feelings are understandable. But the reality is that all large schools do this; it’s part of a public university education. And some studies have suggested that students actually learn better when they’re taught by graduate students.
