WHY BAN CELLPHONES ON CAMPUS FIRST?

DISADVANTAGES OF OVERUSING CELLPHONES

The students in France are not allowed to use

their smartphone and smart devices when they

are at school. This regulation shows that students’ addiction to the use of cellphone is so severe that the government is forced to establish regulations to limit the students’ use of cellphone. In fact, the problem of cellphone use has become a

widespread issue. The misuse or even overuse of cellphone still has room for improvement and

waits for further regulations.

Background

The participants of this study were few and not

wide enough. Next time, I will investigate students of other schools and other grades, which can help me receive more opinions from different students and understand this issue more completely.

Besides, the questionnaire didn’t answer all the questions and respond to my assumptions of

this research. Next time, when I design a new

questionnaire, I will test it first and think clearly about how to make it a better one before

distributing it to a large number of participants. According to the results of the questionnaire, most of the students exceeded their expected time of using the cellphone and put aside what they were doing at the moment to use the

cellphone, which reveals that students had poor self-control ability in cellphone use.

Only half of the students considered their

academic performance would get worse due to the use of cellphones and felt uneasy if without

using a cellphone. The reason for this controversy might result from their poor self-preception

cellphone use, in which they regarded themselves as a smart user of cellphone.

Half of the students expressed that they made no comment on the current system of cellphone

regulations, but most of them showed no

willingness to ban their use of cellphone on

campus. The reasons for their unwillingness to support the ban on the cellphone use is

inconvenience to search for the information, the limitation for entertainment and the personal

habit.

In this study, I attempted to explain how to help students know the harms of overusing their

cellphone and tell them the necessity to ban the cellphone on campus first.

Here are the research questions I’d answer in this paper:

What are the negative effects of overusing the cellphone?

How do students get addicted to using the cellphone?

Why should we ban the cellphone on campus in high school?

According to the research at the University of Kansas, a man’s prefrontal cortex are totally mature when he is

twenty years old. Therefore, the teenager’s ability in self-control is weaker than the adult’s.

The research by the National Sleep Foundation shows that the survival rate of eye cells after the blue-ray

irradiation decreases, and it leads to further sore and dry eyes.  The depression and distraction are more likely to

happen due to the overuse of cellphones, as the research done by the London School suggests. Based on its

survey, the scores of students aged 16 improved by 6% after schools banned mobile phones on campus.
