ONGREGATION

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will present academic degrees to 2,498 graduates during its Eighth Congregation from 8 to 10 November. This is the largest class since 1993 when the University held its first Congregation.

Of the 2,498 graduates, 1,828 are bachelor’s degree recipients, 612 are master’s degree recipients, while 58 will be receiving their PhDs.

On 10 November, honorary doctorates will be conferred on four distinguished persons for their outstanding academic achievements and public services. They are: Prof Cho-Yun Hsu, a Chinese historian; Prof Kun Huang, a leading physicist; The Hon Charles Lee Yeh-kwong, member of the Executive Council; and Prof Daniel I. C. Wang, a biochemical engineer.

Prof Cho-Yun Hsu, Seamen International Visiting Professor at Duke University and University Professor Emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humanities. Prof Kun Huang, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences known for pioneering research in phonon physics, will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Science.

The Hon Charles Lee Yeh-Kwong, member of the Executive Council, Chairman of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd, and Chairman of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws. Prof Daniel I. C. Wang, Institute Professor and Director of Biotechnology Process Engineering Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will be conferred an honorary Doctor of Engineering. Dr Kam-ming Yip, Assistant Professor at the Division of Humanities, is the top teacher of the year. She will be awarded the Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching.

Judy Wai Man-kwan, former President of HKUST Students’ Union, will be presented the Stephen Cheong Kam-chuen Medal for Distinguished Service to the Student Body for her contribution to student services.
