HKUST BUSINESS SCHOOL PRESENTS FIRST GRADUATES
This summer 160 third year undergraduates will be graduating from the School of Business and Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Also graduating will be 96 postgraduate students. The Business School comprises six departments: Accounting, Economics, Finance, Business Information Systems, Management, and Marketing. Almost all Accounting students have managed to get job offers.
According to Professor Yuk-Shee Chan, Dean of the Business School, this first class of HKUST graduates will bring energy to the local industrial and commercial sectors. About IO of the graduates will seek further study. The rest will enter the working world.
The business graduates will join various industries and trades. “HKUST students are confident. They dare to make choices. They chose to attend HKUST when it was newly established, without any track record. So they are pioneers who have shown entrepreneurial spirit. In Hong Kong’s competitive environment this is particularly precious.”
In addition, Professor Chan pointed out that HKUST’s first students have established a Students’ Union, departmental societies and various other organisations. “These first graduates have a long way to go, but they set a path for other graduates in the coming years.”
As Hong Kong becomes more internationalised, graduates are becoming aware of the growing opportunities outside Hong Kong. “Nowadays, many jobs require graduates to pay frequent visits to China; some even require the staff to be stationed in Chinese cities. Organisations from Singapore also attempt to recruit graduates from Hong Kong,” said Professor Chan.

“Hong Kong’s future depends on the development of South China and the whole Asian- Pacific Rim. HKUST intends to contribute to the progress of this region.”
