Roosevelt is one of the greatest leaders in the world. His 16 to leadership, apart from good timing, had a lot to do with his personality traits. To begin with, he was an eloquent simplifier. Not only could he cut through arguments, but he could also offer his people understandable solutions, which was evident when he told the Depression-weary Americans that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” In discovering what people really wanted and

But a great leader won’t go a long way with only eloquence and insight; perseverance is also crucial. Roosevelt was 19 polio at 39, and from then on, he perseveringly struggled with it for the rest of his life. His paralytic illness didn’t discourage him from pursuing his political career. He devoted most of his life to fighting for civil rights and finally succeeded in ending racial segregation and discrimination through nonviolent means. His life and philosophy provides us with a text for learning how to understand and live in a world of conflicts and how to change it 22 creating more conflicts. He advised not to let our emotions take the lead when responding to a conflict. It’s his belief that refusal to revenge ourselves on those who do violence to us is not an act of cowardice, 23 an act of strength or even courage, and courage in the face of violence is a form of resistance. Through nonviolent resistance, he sought to win the opponent over by showing a better side of human beings. 24 important lesson Dr. King teaches us is to never lose faith in ourselves and our cause. On April 3, 1968, the day before he was

assassinated, King delivered his last speech, which witnessed his faith again: “We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop…. I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land!” Dr. King never 25 in the commitment to his cause, and 40 years after his death, Barack Obama was elected President of the United States. Recently I watched the Hindi movie 3 Idiots, which focuses on the current issues with the education system and showcases 31 views provided by the engineering college head, Prof. ViruS with the out-of-box thinking provided by Rancho, an enterprising engineering student. The following are a few points from the movie which are also 32 to the business professionals.

1. Striving for success vs. focusing on excellence: Professor ViruS has a very successful career by becoming the head of the most 33 institute in the country and focuses on maximizing his output every day. However, he cares very little about relationships both with his students and with his family and 34 uses fear to get his way with them; 35 , Rancho focuses on developing his knowledge through curiosity and uses his engineering talent to help others in need. While the professor’s interactions cost lives, Rancho’s 36 save people from death and inspire them to new heights.

2. Fear of failure vs. learning with passion: In the movie, a number of students enter the engineering school because of pressure from family but 37 their own will. This causes them to have a subpar performance and always fear failure during tests, causing some to commit suicide. In contrast, Rancho comes to the institute by his own desire to learn about building machines, and his curiosity and talent help him to 38 the final exams, to everybody’s surprise!

3. Performance review vs. mentoring for growth: 39 the tests at the end of a semester are a good way to evaluate a student’s knowledge of the subject, this movie puts forward the idea that this by itself should not be the end. Instead, the next step should be mentoring the student on what the gaps are and how he/she can do better. The example shared in the movie is that 40 a doctor checks your blood cholesterol and finds a problem, doesn’t he/she have to work with the patient to resolve the problem?

IV. Discourse Structure: 10%

When nature takes something away from a person, it repays him or her with something else. 41 This may or may not be true, but history gives many examples of disabilities that not only did not break a person’s spirits, but on the contrary, inspired the greatest talents in him or her. 42

Fanny Crosby (1820-1915) was blinded by an illness at the age of 6 weeks. 43 Known as an American hymn writer and poetess, Fanny Crosby wrote over 9,000 hymns during her life. She entered the NY Institute at the age of fifteen, and afterward taught English and history. She lived a long and useful life, helping the poor and never complaining about her fate.

44 As a child he mastered several instruments, and even formed a band by the age of ten. A winner of numerous music awards, Stevie is famous for romantic hits that earned him the admiration and respect of fans from all over the world. His blindness only made him feel deeper, and express it “from the bottom of his heart.”

45 Every member of society must have the chance to realize his or her dreams.

(A) Though her life was not easy, she never gave up or became bitter.

(B) For example, when someone loses one or more senses, the surviving senses become more sensitive.

(C) The lives of several extremely gifted musicians, blind for most of their lives, are demonstrative examples.

(D) As illustrated above, these outstanding musicians proved that blindness cannot be an obstacle to a full and meaningful life.

(E) A premature birth, and the illnesses that followed, took Stevie Wonder’s sight away from him, but not of his musical gift.

(1) Astro Boy, originally named Tetsuwan Atom, was created in 1951 by Japanese cartoonist and animator Osamu Tezuka, only six years after the end of World War II. The

(4)

4 original Astro Boy comic book series was wildly popular and runs almost 5,000 pages.

In 1963, twelve years after the comic book series was introduced, Tezuka launched a black and white animated TV series of Astro Boy. As Japan was recovering from the ravages of war, Astro Boy, a child-robot with super-powers, captured the imagination of a nation in need of hopes and dreams.

The original Astro Boy television series was broadcast in more than 50 countries. In 1980 a second TV series was made, this time in color, and in 2003 a third TV series was made using CG animation.

As created by Tezuka, Astro Boy is a robot created by a brilliant scientist as a substitute for his son who was killed in a traffic accident. The scientist gives Astro Boy his super powers – eyes like searchlights, ears that hear for miles, fingers enhanced with lasers, limbs that fire rockets and the ability to fly!

But, along with these powers, Astro Boy also has a soul, a conscience and human emotion. Caught between humans and robots, Astro Boy experiences various difficult situations but grows up by overcoming the problems he faces.

Three generations ago, Astro Boy ignited the imagination of millions of Japanese children. Some of these same children became leaders in culture and industry, particularly in the field of robotics.

Astro Boy had a major impact in a country searching for its future. And, this child-robot with a soul continues to inspire new generations of robot makers around the world.

46. According to the passage, Astro Boy has NOT been made into _____.

(A) a comic series (B) a TV series in color (C) a novel (D) a movie 47. Which of the following statements about Astro Boy is True?

(A) He was created during wartime. (B) He is completely a robot.

(C) He is a human with super powers. (D) He plays an influential role in robotics. (2) On Tuesday, at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a team of European scientists revealed the discovery of at least 50 new worlds. One of them, known as HD 85512 b, circles a star about 36 light-years away in the constellation Vela, or at a quarter of the distance that Earth circles the sun. The planet sits just inside its sun’s habitable

zone, where liquid water, and perhaps even life, could potentially exist.

“And it’s [possible] that it could be habitable,” says Geoff Marcy, who leads a different team of planet hunters at the University of California, Berkeley.

Possible is the best word anyone can say for now. A clearer answer will have to wait for more powerful telescopes to be built. The question of whether 85512 b actually is home to life will depend on many factors. Does 85512 b have any water to start with? Does it have a solid, rocky surface on which life can live? Does it have a cloud layer to avoid overheating from its sun?

Nobody knows. After all, so many conditions must fall in line. The new world is still a big deal, though. It proves that astronomers now have the technology to find these kinds of planets.

The 50 new planets announced in Wyoming were discovered from the ground with a device called the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, or HARPS to look for a star’s slight wobble. The wobbles occur when the gravity of an orbiting planet tugs the star one way, then the other. The very first exoplanets were found this way. An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a distant star other than our sun.

48. Based on the news item, which of the following is NOT a decisive factor for a planet to have life?

(A) It contains water. (B) It has a solid, rocky surface. (C) It has to be about the size of the earth. (D) It has a cooling cloud layer. 49 .Based on the news item, which of the following is True?

(A) Geoff Marcy found 85512 b with HARPS.

(B) 85512 b could contain water because it sits in the habitable zone of its sun. (C) 85512 b and the earth orbit the same star at different distances.

(D) Now we have the technology to prove 85512 b habitable. 50. What is the best title for this passage?

(A) Another Earth? (B) 50 New Worlds Join the Exoplanet List. (C) The Development of Astrology. (D) 85512 b : An Exoplanet That Supports Life. (3) The focus of mentoring is to develop the whole person and so the techniques are broad and require wisdom in order to be used appropriately. A 1995 study of mentoring

(5)

5 techniques most commonly used in business found that the five most commonly used techniques among mentors were:

1. Accompanying: making a commitment in a caring way, which involves taking part in the learning process side-by-side with the learner.

2. Sowing: mentors are often confronted with the difficulty of preparing the learner before he or she is ready to change. Sowing is necessary when you know that what you say may not be understood or even acceptable to learners at first but will make sense and have value to the mentee when the situation requires it.

3. Catalyzing: when change reaches a critical level of pressure, learning can jump. Here the mentor chooses to plunge the learner right into change, provoking a different way of thinking, a change in identity or a re-ordering of values.

4. Showing: this is making something understandable, or using your own example to demonstrate a skill or activity. You show what you are talking about, you show by your own behavior.

5. Harvesting: here the mentor focuses on “picking the ripe fruit”: it is usually used to create awareness of what was learned by experience and to draw conclusions. The key questions here are: “What have you learned?”, “How useful is it?”

Different techniques may be used by mentors according to the situation and the mindset of the mentee, and the techniques used in modern organizations can be found in ancient education systems, from the Socratic technique of harvesting to the accompaniment method of learning used in the apprenticeship of itinerant cathedral builders during the Middle Ages. Leadership authors Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner advise mentors to look for “teachable moments” in order to “expand or realize the potentialities of the people in the organizations they lead” and underline that personal credibility is as essential to quality mentoring as skill.

51. Which of the following mentoring techniques can be put to use when a learner is going to make a breakthrough in his/her performance?

(A) Accompanying. (B) Catalyzing. (C) Showing. (D) Harvesting. 52. A constructor in the Medieval Period may have put into practice the technique of

when he/she supervised an apprentice.

(A) accompanying (B) catalyzing (C) showing (D) harvesting

(4) The Jim Crow Laws were state and local laws in the United States enacted between 1876 and 1965. They assigned authority to racial segregation in all public facilities. After World War II, African Americans increasingly challenged segregation, as they believed they had more than earned the right to be treated as full citizens because of their military service and sacrifices. The Civil Rights Movement was energized by a number of flashpoints, including the 1946 attack on World War II veteran Isaac Woodard while he was in U.S. Army uniform in South Carolina. In 1948, President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981, desegregating the armed services.

Rosa Parks’ 1955 act of civil disobedience, in which she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man, was a catalyst in later years of the Civil Rights Movement. The Montgomery Bus Boycott led by Martin Luther King, Jr., which followed Rosa Parks’ action, was, however, not the first of its kind. Numerous boycotts and demonstrations against segregation had occurred throughout the 1930s and 1940s. These early demonstrations achieved positive results and helped spark political activism. Leroy Irvis of Pittsburgh’s Urban League in Pennsylvania, for instance, led a demonstration against employment discrimination by Pittsburgh’s department stores in 1947, launching his own influential political career.

In 1964, President Johnson pushed Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act. On July 2, President Johnson signed the historic legislation. However, on June 21, three civil rights workers disappeared in Neshoba County, Mississippi. The three were volunteers aiding in the registration of African-American voters as part of the Mississippi Summer Project. Forty-four days later, the Federal Bureau of Investigation recovered their bodies buried in an earthen dam. The Neshoba County deputy sheriff, Cecil Price and 16 others, all Ku Klux Klan members, were indicted for the crimes; seven were convicted.

The murder of voting-rights activists gained national attention. Finally, the attack on March 7, 1965 by state troopers on peaceful marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, persuaded President Johnson to issue a call for a strong voting rights law. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 ended legally sanctioned state barriers to voting for all federal, state and local elections.
