"HKUST
fosters entrepreneurship with different courses and competitions
to transfer what has been learned and developed into practice."
Jan, Langston and Matthew, who were from different programs, joined hands to bring to the market an ultrasound technology that enables drugs to be delivered into the eye painlessly without leaving side effects. Jan recalls how his path was paved under the strong entrepreneurship culture at HKUST. He regularly joined the Be Your Own Boss seminar senes organized by the Entrepreneurship Center and gained great insights on entrepreneurship. He learned about writing a business plan in a professional development course.
The trio won multiple accolades. starting with an award in the HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition. They went on to win the HK Chapter championship, Asia Region championship, and the Asia Rising Star Award in the 2015 TiE International Business Plan Competition. They were also named one of 50 emerging global entrepreneurs to watch by Inc. Magazine. They subsequently founded their own company which received several funding support from HKUST and the HK government for developing a prototype and carrying out clinical studies.

"We
met a lot of like
-
minded people at HKUST.
We share the same passion for our dreams."
Amanda and Yan came up with an idea the first day they met at HKUST. The result from that meeting was a mobile app-based start-up that matches domestic helpers and agencies with employers. Just months after its soft launch. MamaHelpers. the first free. open domestic helper database in Hong Kong. has attracted 30.000 members, maintained a database of more than 20,000 helper profiles, and attracted 9,000 active users daily. Throughout the journey, HKUST served more than a meeting ground. Amanda and Yan chose two supervisors who are experts in data and information management and cyber-security respectively. Both of them have
offered substantial support to help the duo actualize their dream.
They have also formed a close community with the other student-entrepreneurs in their program. They learn from each other through sharing of mistakes made and lessons learned. The advice they got from them has proved lo be helpful lo their company.
Having received various innovation and funding awards, MamaHelpers has now confirmed partnerships in Singapore. Indonesia and the Philippines. and is poised to expand to the Southeast Asian market.
