The New Talent Of Taiwanese
Cinema At HKUST
Tsai Ming Liang, Taiwan's award-winning film director, is artist-in-residence at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology during March.
Tsai represents one of the new generation of filmakers in Taiwan. His one-month residency program includes screenings, seminar and workshops.
The young director made his debut feature in 1992 with Rebels of the Neon God, which won the Bronze Medal at the Tokyo Film Festival and was named Best Film in the China Times Express Film Awards. His second production,Vive L 'Amour, won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival, and Best Director and Best Actor Awards at the Nantes Film Festival. The River, the last of the trilogy, received the Silver Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival. He has just
completed his latest work,The Hole.
"My films, including Rebels of the Neon God and Vive L 'Amour, are closely related to the economic prosperity and social changes in Taipei. I hope to move slowly from the surface towards the inner life of man. When I was shooting The River, I kept on reminding myself that I have to reveal man's inner self, or even his darkest side," explains Tsai.
Born in 1957 in Malaysia, Tsai wrote and directed stage plays and television drama before he shot to fame in 1992.
