Earth Day began in 1970. It was started by a senator from Minnesota named Gaylord Nelson. In the 1960s, Senator Nelson worked hard to pass laws to protect the environment. He gave speeches about taking better care of the Earth. He wanted to get everyone involved, so he decided to set aside one special day to honor out planet.

Dearth Day was first held on April 22, 1970. It was a great success. People marched in parades. At picnics and rallies, people made speeches about protecting the environment. Americans pitched in to clean up their neighborhoods, towns and cities. Volunteers cleaned up rivers, lakes, ocean waters and shorelines.

This day marked the beginning of the environmentalist movement in the United States. After that, more and more people began joining environmental groups. People began urging the government to work harder to protect the environment. Congress passed stricter laws against air and water pollution. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was set up. The EPA’s job is to make sure that people, businesses, and the government obey laws that have been passed to keep the Earth clean.

This Earth Day was not celebrated again until 1990. This time, people all over the world were invited to participate. On April 22, 1990, people in 141 different countries celebrated the first International Earth Day. People then decided to celebrate this Earth Day every year. According to the Earth Day Network, in 2009, it was celebrated by more than one billion people worldwide. The U.N. also participated in this Earth Day celebration.

Earth Day has united people around the world who are interested in voicing their concerns about the Earth. Cities in 184 different countries now hold Earth Day events and programs. Nature walks and wildlife art sows are included in many celebrations. Volunteers plant trees,

(4)

grass and other plants. People pick up litter. Walk-a-thons or bike-a-thons are held to raise money to help protect the environment.

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable occupations. Personal consultants give them better advice about finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability. While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman. Handsome male executives were perceived as having more integrity than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to account for their success. On the contrary, attractive female executives were considered to have less integrity than unattractive ones; their success was attributed not be ability but to factors such as luck. All unattractive female

executives were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable than the attractive female executives.

Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is perceived to be more feminine and an attractive man more masculine than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine position appears to lack the “masculine” qualities required. This is true even in politics. “When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women

differently,” says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. Then they were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them. The results showed that attractive males utterly defeated unattractive men, but the women who had been ranked most attractive received the fewest votes.

70. The word “liability” most probably means “ .”

(A) blessing (B) disadvantage (C) instability (D) fortune 71. According to the passage, in traditionally female jobs, attractiveness .

(A) reinforces the feminine qualities required (B) always enables women to succeed quickly (C) makes women look more honest and capable (D) is of little importance to women

72. Anne Bowman’s experiment reveals that when it comes to politics, attractiveness . (A) turns out to be an obstacle to men

(B) has as little effect on men as on women (C) affects men only

(D) is more of an obstacle than a benefit to women 73. The author writes this passage for the purpose of .

(A) giving advice to attractive job-seekers (B) emphasizing the importance of appearance

(C) discussing the negative aspects of being attractive (D) demanding equal rights for women
