(A) Monarch butterflies are a common summer sight in the northern United States and Canada. These large orange and

black insects brighten parks and gardens as they flit among the flowers. What makes monarchs particularly interesting is that they migrate—all the way to California or Mexico and back. They are thought to be the only insect that does this.

Every year in the late summer, monarchs begin their trek to the south. Those heading for Mexico go first for the Louisiana-Mississippi region, then across the Gulf of Mexico into Texas (some have been spotted overnighting on oil platforms in the gulf). Once in Mexico, they establish themselves in one of about fifteen sites in a mountain forest filled with fir trees. Each site provides a winter home for millions of monarchs. The butterflies are so numerous that they often cover entire trees. When spring comes, they begin their long journey north.

The question is often asked whether every butterfly makes the round-trip journey every year. And the answer is no. The average monarch lives about nine months. So one flying north might lay eggs in Louisiana and then die. The eggs of that generation may be found in Kentucky; the eggs of the next generation may end up in Wisconsin or Michigan. The last generation of the season, about the fourth, will make the trek back to Mexico and restart the cycle.

Scientists learn about monarchs’ migration by capturing and placing identifying tags on the insects. By recapturing a tagged monarch and noting where it came from, the next scientist can figure out things like the butterfly’s age and its

routing. (From Six-Way Advanced)

51. This passage is mostly about _______________________. (A) the places where monarchs spend the winter

(B) tagging and identifying monarchs (C) migration patterns of monarchs (D) what monarchs look like

52. Based on this passage, which of the following is Not True? (A) Monarchs winter across the Gulf of Mexico.

(B) Monarchs migrate in large numbers.

(C) Whether every monarch makes the round-trip journey remains unknown.

(D) After winter, the possible routing of monarchs is Louisiana --> Kentucky --> Wisconsin. 53. A trek is a __________.

(A) ride (B) path (C) detour (D) journey

(B) Marriage ceremonies are big business in Taiwan, as the large number of wedding shops attests. If you spend any

length of time in Taiwan, you’re likely to be invited to a wedding. The wedding invitation is invariably red—a happy color—and it usually brings with it the obligation to present money to the newlyweds. Therefore, it is often referred to as a “red bomb”.

Should you receive a red bomb from a Taiwanese friend, you’ll be happy to know that the money you are expected to give is used to pay for the fabulous 10-course meal that will be served at the wedding party. You needn’t bring any other gifts, just the money. The money should be cash—not a check—and it must be placed in a red envelope. It must be red because a white envelope is a sign of death. Red envelopes should be used any time you give money to somebody, such as for a birthday, a gift or even if you just owe it to them. Never give NT$4000 as the number four is taboo. The typical amount expected these days is about NT$1000 per person. It’s OK to give more, but make sure that the second digit of the total amount is not an odd number because a married couple is an even pair—an odd number indicates that the couple will separate. It’s OK to bring an uninvited friend with you, but be sure to put an extra NT$600 in the envelope for each guest and let the host know in advance so enough food can be ordered. Be sure to write your name on the envelope so the newlyweds know who it’s from.
