PACKAGE TOUR AND HOTEL OCCUPANCY RATE
PACKAGE TOURIn May 2004, 188,942 visitors arrived in Macao in package tours, up 39.3 times compared with May 2003 when Macao was affected by the SARS epidemic in the neighbouring areas. These visitors mainly came from Mainland China (162,612), Taiwan (10,903) and Hong Kong (5,504). In the first five months of 2004, visitors arrived in package tours surged 74.5% over the same period of 2003, totalled at 970,408.
The number of Macao residents travelling in package tours was 15,120, up 15.5 times compared with May 2003. Mainland China, Thailand and Japan were the three most popular package tour itineraries, which accounted for 83.8%, 5.9% and 3.1% of the total respectively. In the first five months of 2004, the number of Macao residents travelling in package tours increased 58.0% over the same period of 2003.
Meanwhile, 22,301 Macao residents travelled under own arrangements with the assistance of travel agencies, up 466.0% over May 2003; Mainland China (30.5%), Taiwan (29.5%) and Hong Kong (14.3%) were the major destinations. In the first five months of 2004, the number of Macao residents travelling under such arrangements increased 68.9% compared with the corresponding period of 2003.
HOTEL OCCUPANCY RATE
In May 2004, the average occupancy rate of the hotel sector was 71.1%, up 38.4 percentage points year- on-year. The average occupancy rate of 3-star hotels was the highest, at 79.0%. The average length of stay of overnight guests was 1.19 nights, down 0.14 night over May 2003. At the end of May 2004, there were 9,313 rooms available in hotels and similar establishments, an increase of 4.4% compared with the same month of 2003.
In May 2004, a total of 314,608 overnight guests checked into hotels and similar establishments, up 165.7% over May 2003. The majority of the guests came from Mainland China (57.0%), Hong Kong (31.0%) and Taiwan (3.1%). In the first five months of 2004, there were 1,556,255 overnight guests, up 49.1% compared with the same period of 2003.
