PACKAGE TOUR AND HOTEL OCCUPANCY RATE
PACKAGE TOUR
With the impact from the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the neighbouring places and the pause of outbound tours from Mainland China, visitors to Macao in package tours recorded a year-on-year fall of 97.8% to 4,687 in May 2003. These visitors came mainly from Hong Kong (2,147), Mainland China (1,540) and Taiwan (616). In the first five months of 2003, there were 555.983 arrivals in package tours, decreased by 40.7%
compared with the same period of 2002.
The number of Macao residents travelled in package tours plunged 92.8% to 919 compared with May 2002.
Thailand, Mainland China and Japan were the three most popular package tour itineraries; they accounted for 37.4%, 35.0% and 11.4% of the total, respectively. In the first five months of 2003, the number of Macao residents travelled in package tours decreased significantly by 46.2% compared with the same period of 2002.
Meanwhile, there were 3,940 Macao residents travelled under own arrangements with the assistance of travel agencies, a sharp decrease of 79.0% over May 2002. The major destinations were Taiwan (27.5%), Thailand (16.9%) and Mainland China (15.4%). In the first five months of 2003, the number of Macao residents travelled under such arrangements decreased by 29.7% compared with the same period of 2002.
HOTEL OCCUPANCY RATE
In May 2003, the average occupancy rate of the hotel sector was 32.7%, dropped 35.7 percentage points over May 2002. The average occupancy rate of 5-star hotels was the highest, at 42.0%. The average length of stay of overnight guests was 1.33 nights, increased by 0.09 night over May 2002.
At the end of May 2003, there were 8,917 rooms available in hotels and similar establishments, a slight decrease of 0.4% compared with the same month of 2002.
There were 118,395 overnight guests checked into hotels and similar establishments, a notable decline of 56.7%
over May 2002. The majority of the guests came from Hong Kong (63.2%), Mainland China (22.7%) and Taiwan (2.2%).
In the first five months of 2003, there were 1,044,146 overnight guests, equivalent to a decrease of 17.8% over the same period in 2002.
