5. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

(1) identify the distinct grammatical features between Chinese and English languages and demonstrate related linguistics knowledge when practising translation;

(2) apply the basic practical skills and principles of translation in performing translation tasks;

(3) integrate analytical and problem-solving skills with effective translating strategies to tackle problems in translation;

(4) employ translation tools and technology to facilitate translation work;

(5) demonstrate a basic understanding of the professional ethics for translation practitioners; and

(6) develop self-understanding for further studies and career development in the related field.

7. The Context

The information on possible study and career pathways is provided to enhance students’ understanding of the wider context of the specific Applied Learning course. Students who have successfully completed Applied Learning courses have to meet other entry requirements as specified by the institutions.

The recognition of Applied Learning courses for admission to further studies and career opportunities is at the discretion of relevant institutions. The Education Bureau and the course providers of Applied Learning are exploring and seeking recognition related to further education and career development opportunities for students successfully completing the Applied Learning courses.

Future global and local outlook

globalisation brings the world closer together. As Chinese and English are widely used languages, translation (Chinese – English) has become important in both social and commercial contexts

the demand for translation in Hong Kong has been increasing rapidly in recent years

different human resources surveys indicate that abundant job vacancies require applicants with bilingual/multilingual literacy and fluency, and the ability to switch between the languages

Learning and Teaching Course Title : Practical Translation (CHI-ENG) Area of Studies : Cross Areas of Studies

Course Provider : Lingnan Institute of Further Education

In Practical Translation (CHI-ENG), student-centred learning and teaching activities are designed to enable students to understand fundamental theories and concepts, develop their generic skills, and address their career aspirations in translation.

Different modes of activities are employed to provide students with a systematic understanding about the context (e.g. role-plays and debates on whether machine translation can replace human translation) and eye-opening opportunities to experience the complexity of the context (e.g. sharing by industry professionals and visiting translation companies to understand the operations of the field).

Students acquire an understanding of the requirements, fundamental knowledge and skills essential for further learning within the area through learning-by-practising opportunities in an authentic or near-authentic environment (e.g. applying the practical translation theories when translating different texts, understanding the translation requirements in the workplace and conducting case studies).

Students are also encouraged to develop and apply conceptual, practical and reflective skills to demonstrate entrepreneurship and innovation (e.g. case studies on different areas including news, literature works, legal and commercial documents). Students are given opportunities to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired and consolidate their learning (e.g. students are required to complete an integrated group project to draw upon and integrate the knowledge and skills acquired, e.g. comprehend a variety of reference materials, compose reports, apply translation theories, make reflections and develop fluency in written and oral presentations).

Curriculum Pillars of Applied Learning in Context – Practical Translation (CHI-ENG)

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

- identify the distinct grammatical features between Chinese and English languages and demonstrate related linguistics knowledge when practising translation;

- apply the basic practical skills and principles of translation in performing translation tasks;

- integrate analytical and problem-solving skills with effective translating strategies to tackle problems in translation;

- employ translation tools and technology to facilitate translation work;

- demonstrate a basic understanding of the professional ethics for translation practitioners; and

- develop self-understanding for further studies and career development in the related field.

Through the specific contexts related to the course, students have different learning opportunities, for example:

1. Career-related Competencies

- understand the career paths for translation professionals and the related qualification requirements;

- demonstrate a basic understanding of the professional ethics in the translation industry;

- integrate and apply basic translation skills (including English to Chinese and Chinese to English) in translation work;

- understand the characteristics of commercial texts, media texts, legal texts and literature works; and

- identify the latest trends in the translation industry.

2. Foundation Skills

- strengthen communication skills through discussions and presentations;

- strengthen writing skills through translation projects and tasks;

- demonstrate effective translation skills in the translation industry;

- employ translation tools and technology to facilitate the translation tasks; and - apply translation skills in daily life.

3. Thinking Skills

- identify problems in translation, and formulate effective translating strategies in dealing with translation problems;

- integrate knowledge from different disciplines (including linguistics, information technology and cultural knowledge) in planning and applying translation skills in translation work; and

- decide proper translating strategies in translation.

4. People Skills

- demonstrate communication and interpersonal skills through interactions with classmates;

- apply collaboration skills to work cooperatively with groupmates and contribute ideas in group translation projects; and

- develop self-management skills such as good time management and task prioritisation skills through planning of an integrated translation project.

5. Values and Attitudes

- demonstrate positive values and attitudes when practising translation;

- demonstrate a basic understanding of the professional ethics in the translation industry; and

- show enthusiasm, motivation and willingness to learn in learning-by-practising opportunities.
