Cultivating Great Minds in Technology Student Exchange with ETH Zurich Launched
A ceremony to mark the launch of a science and technology student exchange program between HKUST and ETH Zurich in Switzerland was held today at the HKUST Clear Water Bay campus. ETH Zurich, also known as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, is the alma mater of Albert Einstein. Established in 1854, it is Switzerland’s oldest and largest Federal university.
The cooperation agreement between the two universities is set to boost contact between students. The first batch of students will embark on exchange in the academic year 2008-09. The agreement will also facilitate joint research projects and faculty exchange. Prof Yuk-Shan Wong, Acting President and Vice-President for Administration and Business, Prof Philip Chan, Dean of Engineering, and Prof Shiu Yuen Cheng, Dean of Science, attended the launch ceremony for HKUST. Ms. Judith Holzheimer of the Student Exchange Office represented ETH Zurich .
“The cooperation agreement with ETH Zurich opens another fascinating window on the wider academic world for School of Engineering students,” Dean Chan said. “Stronger links between two such leading universities will also be of mutual benefit in our drive to advance scientific and technological innovation.” ETH Zurich has produced 21 Nobel Prize winners in the course of its history, including Einstein (Physics 1921), who studied at the university in the 1890s and returned to teach physics from 1912-1916. Among other winners are Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen (Physics 1901), Felix Bloch (Physics 1952), and current ETH professor Kurt Wuthrich (Chemistry 2002).
The Swiss university continues to be a key player globally in science and technological development. In Times Higher Education Supplement rankings for 2007, ETH Zurich was ranked at 42 in the World’s Top 200 Universities league table and at 13 in the World’s Top 100 Technology Universities rankings. The latter ranking is the highest among countries in Europe other than the UK.
HKUST School of Engineering and School of Science currently have student exchange agreements with over 60 universities around the world, including Britain, Canada , Demark , France , Germany , Ireland , Japan,
Netherlands, Norway , Singapore , South
Korea , Sweden , Switzerland , Thailand, and the US. Exchange partners include many top-ranking universities in technology, among them UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, Cornell, Toronto, Technical U of Munich, Tsinghua, and Kyoto University .

科大與愛因斯坦母校蘇黎世聯邦工業大學合作培育科技 精英 香港科技大學於2008年3月31日，舉行了本校與蘇黎世聯 邦工業大學學生交換計劃揭幕典禮。蘇黎世聯邦工業大 學(ETH Zurich‧下簡稱蘇工大)創辦於1854年，是科學家 愛因斯坦的母校，也是瑞士歷史最悠久、規模最大的聯 邦大學。該項交換計劃的目的是要促進兩校理科及工科 學生的交流，第一批交換生將於2008-09學年開始。合作 協議還包括教學及研究項目的交流。 科大副校長（行政）黃玉山教授以署理校長身份，聯同 工學院院長陳正豪教授及理學院院長鄭紹遠教授出席了 揭幕禮，蘇工大方面，由學生交流辦公室的Judith Holzheimer女士代表出席。陳正豪院長表示：「與蘇工 大的合作協議，為我們的工學生展開了更廣闊的學術視 野。同時，兩所頂尖學府的合作，也能驅動雙方在科技 上的創新力再上一層。」 蘇工大一共產生了二十一位諾貝爾獎科學家，其中有舉 世聞名的愛因斯坦(1921年物理)，他於1890年考進該校 就讀，並於1912至1916年間任教物理。其他獲諾貝爾獎 的還有 Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen(1901年物理)、Felix Bloch(1952年物理)，以及現於ETH Zurich任教的Kurt Wuthrich(2002年化學)。 蘇工大在全球的科研發展上，一向處於領先地位。根據 《泰晤士報高等教育特刊》於2007年對200所世界一級大 學的調查結果顯示，ETH Zurich名列第42名，而在工科 大學的排名為第13位，在歐洲大陸範圍內排名最高。 科大工學院與理學院目前已跟世界各地超過六十所大學 訂定學生交流協議，這些國家包括：英國、加拿大、丹 麥、法國、德國、愛爾蘭、日本、荷蘭、挪威、新加 坡、南韓、瑞典、瑞士、泰國，以及美國。我們的合作 夥伴都是工科中最優秀的學府，例如加州柏克萊大學、 喬治亞理工學院、康乃爾大學、多倫多大學、德國慕尼 黑科技大學、清華大學與京都大學。 傳媒查詢 何美懿 電話：2358-8982 電郵：[email protected]
