A new scholarship scheme for local universities has been estab-lished this year by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (center).
Two scholarships have gone to UST students to cover tuition, accommodation and living expenses during the course of their three-year undergraduate program.

This award is worth HK$50,000 to the student, and HK$100,000 to UST.

anuary, Antony Leung, Chairman of the Education Commission, presented his penetrating views on how education reform is of critical impor-tance in enhancing Hong Kong's competitive edge.Several UST faculty members have been heavily involved in this process, giving freely of their own time and energy to examine the future of tertiary education and its relation to secondary schools in Hong Kong.
As regards the Government’s consultation paper,“Education Blueprint for the 21st century”,and the future of tertiary education, Dr Michael K. Y. Wong (PHYS) said that the UST Education Forum had discussed the paper with the Education Commission and sub-mitted a document summarizing its views. The document was signed by more than 90 faculty members, researchers and administrators at UST.
While agreeing with the “Overall Aims of Education’,as elucidated by the Commission，出EUST Forum added that in ear‘l childhood 巴ducation,memorization and voluminous exercises should be actively discouraged, and that more emphasis should be placed on nurturing sensitivity and the desire to learn. On school education, the Forum stressed that

balanced development" should take priority over the“

The aim of this project-Cooperation on Science Education 一 is to help bridge the gap between secondary and tertiary education. As a result, the UST QEF project has been offering IT training courses to secondary school science teachers. It has already held a series of workshops on popular science, and organized mathematics and statistics workshops, residential camps and seminars for secondary school teachers.

UST Students Triumph in
International Case Competition

team 心 m … studentsfought its way to the final round of a major international case competition held in Los Angeles recently. The 3rd Annual Marshall International Invitational Case Com-petition, held from 24 to 26 February 1999, saw student teams from 14 of the world

s top busi-ness schools battle it out for honors.The UST team won one of three runner-up awards, their winning case being a business plan formulated for the Taiwan electronics giant Acer Computer. From receiving the case information, each team had only
48 hours to prepare their analysis and recommendations and deliver a profes-sional presentation before two separate panels of judges.
The UST team comprised four final-year undergrads:
Alice Kwan 叭Teng Lam (ACCT), Linda Chu Tze Ning (FINA), Tony Lau Ka Lap (ACCT) and Catherine Yu Yee

2 月 27 日 s 一個晴朗而溫暖的日于。七 十多個科大的義工 3 一大清早來到將軍澳的 靈寶醫院 3 將歡樂帶給院中的病人。 這坎活動由新成立的社會服務隊安排》 並得到副校長（行政及總務）辦公室、校園服 務虛、保安部及教學技術中心等部門的贊助 和支持。大學的教職員亦踴躍參與。 當日上午九時 ， 義工乘搭校巴公司 兔費提供的巴士從大學出發 3 抵達靈寶 醫院後 3 便到病房協助病人到大堂 3 欣賞為 他們預備的節目 。隨著 ︱、誼隆副校長（ Mr Paul Bolton）、安全及環保處關繼祖處長和吳 校長太太代表大學致辭及與院方交換紀念品 後 ，精彩的表演開始了。 為甚麼會計學系的魏懷篠艷竟然女扮男 裝 3 戲弄校產管理處的馮蘇若懿 2 不用擔 心 3 這只是黃梅調折子戲《遊龍戲鳳》的一 段。扮演店小二的是學生事務處的蕭觀明 ， 他手持掃帝趣怪的扮相 3 令人忍俊不禁。 很難相信動物養撞實驗昕的用嘉慧在表 演前幾天對廣術還是一竅不通。她不但手法 熟練3而且每一個小玩意都很有意，思》例如 其中一個是把盟在繩上的幾件物件在一剎那 間解間 ，象徵在新的年頭裡 3 一切的問題都 可迎刃而解。6

深入研究。 為害極大的懸浮粒子 懸浮粒于亦稱氣溶膠 3是飄浮在空氣中的細小徽粒，它的直徑 可以小至百萬分之一米左右，看不見 3 摸不著 3 然而含有很多有害 成份。這些有害成份部份來自汽車廢氣，部份來自陰溝、發霉物 品、山火、動植物、土壤等。最可怕的是2懸浮粒于被 IJ&入肺部之 後，它會粘附在呼吸道上 2 引起各種呼吸道疾病，還可能導致肺部 疾病、心臟疾病、造成見童早夭。科大的研究表明 ，這些懸浮粒子 中，致癌和引起基因突變的主要化學物質一多環芳趣的含量相當 高。生物學系肅文官博士的研究表明 3 本港所收集到的懸浮粒子都 會有引起話變的化學毒物。化學工程學系陳澤強博士發現3 除了影 響健康 3 這些懸浮粒子也是形成酸雨、 影響室內外大氣環境的主 因。 利用尖端儀揮和污染物“指紋”的測定方法，環境及持續發展研 究所的方明博士及其他研究人員檢測到經過長程傳輸來港的污染微 粒。在適當的氣象條件下 ， 他們可以識別從海洋吹來的 較為潔淨的空氣，也可以 “捕捉”到由北風帶來的塵埃 和內地污染物。研究結果出 人意料，雖然影響香港空氣 的污染物擴散受到北風（冬 季季候風）的影響 ，但是直 接由內地傳來的污染物對本 港的影響並不像一般想像中 那樣嚴重。 因此，要改善本 港的空氣品質， 主要還得立 足本地。 員 A 科研人員正在收集空氣中的懸浮粒子。 通過對本港各區的空氣質素進行對照，機械工程學系葛時俊博 士和海岸與大氣研究中心的劉敢漢博士發現，除了旺角、銅鑼灣這 些原昕周知的空氣污i竭地區外，在大嶼山的東浦新市鎮竟然有相當 高的空氣污染指數。那裡人少車少，污染何來？原來四季常刮的東 風是禍首，它把港島和九龍的汽車廢氣和其他污染氣體源源不斷地 帶了過去。這一事實說明 3 在整體污染加劇的現狀下，人煙稀少、 依山環海的地區也很難“獨善其身” 。 室內污染和生物監測 高揮發性有機物、懸浮粒于中的化合物 3 以及這兩類 污染物對健康的影響，是室內空氣污染的主要研究對擊。一 科大的研究人員所開發的研究 PM2.5 懸浮粒子的有機萃取 方法 3 和同步研究無機和有機物特徵的經驗 ，有利於室內 空氣污染的研究。 機械工程學系趙宇恆博士的研究指出，室內、室外空 氣污染關懷密切 ，而且室內常比室外空氣污濁很多倍 。方 明博士發現，室內懸浮粒子的成份遠比室外複雜3而縱使 在有空調的室內 3懸浮粒子內仍會繼續進行複雜的化學和 生物化學變化。 植物比動物（包括人類）對空氣中的有毒物質更加敏 感 3 環境及持續發展研究研的劉培生博士在本地的植物中 篩選對空氣污染特別敏感的藹 ，考察它們與大氣污染水平 的關係，力圖建立採樣及分析的標準， 找出適合的生物標 誌。 他們的研究顯示 》直徑 在 2.5 做米（常稱為 PM2.5) 的懸浮粒子 3 昕舍的毒性物 質更集中 ，對人體健康危害 更大。因此他們強烈建議， 本港應當盡快與歐美發達國 家j采取一致行動 3 制定法規 監測和限制 PM2.5 的懸浮粒 子。 懸浮粒子的顯微電鏡圖片（閩中的粗棒是渲紙纖 維） （上）從旺角地區三米高處收集的懸浮粒 子，（下）從鶴嘴（遠離市鎮的郊野地區）收集的 懸浮粒子。 方明博士表示 ， 要徹底解決本港的污染問題3 首先要 有目光遠大的全盤經濟政策作為基礎。短期來看 ，收集數 據和限制汽車總數是必要的。長遠來看 2必須加強全民的 環保教育 ，並進一步改善公共交通。此外，發展企共電車 網也值得有關部門考慮。 同創 一九九九年四月4二日7

科大新設七項獎學金
在州時， 大學共頒授近三百項獎學金 3 總額逾六百多萬 T.L元，與去年相若 3 共 250多位本科生及研究生受惠。 大學發展與公共事務處主任彭恩梅說 ： “我們衷心感謝社會人 士、工商機構及基金會對教育事業的大力支持。儘管本港經濟放 緩，我們在本年度仍然得到多項捐贈，其中更有不少為新設的獎學 盒，我們對此深表謝意。” 在本地及跨國企業、教育基金會及慈善團體的資助下，大學在 本年度新設了七項獎學金計劃﹒ 聯邦快遞海外交換生獎學金 聯邦快遞亞太區總裁鄧博華（如iichael Ducker）在科大擁有雙重 身分－｛也既是科大的學生， 也是捐贈者。他正在科大修讀行政人員 工商管理碩士課程，親身體驗到科大提供的優質教學。他說 ． “聯邦 快遞的技俯在行肉居於領先地位 ，即以，我們的合作伙伴也是香港 一流的科技大學。我們的僱員都是最優秀、最出眾的人才，科大的 學生很多都符合我們的要求。” 該獎學金資助三位修讀工問管理碩士說：程的同學參加國際交換 生計剖，每人獲五干美元（約 38,750 港元）的獎學金，並可到聯邦快 遞香港辦事處實習。 安達信公司獎學金 該獎學金為三位會計學系二年級同學提供15,000元的獎學金， 同學並可於暑假到該公司實習 。 安建信企司合伙人容頭文說：“我們希望獎勵成績優異的學生 ， 並在實習過程中物色優秀的學生加入我們的行列，為他們提供專業 的訓練 ，培養高質素的會計人才 。” 獲獎的譚駿﹛果說 “獎學金可以減輕我的經濟負擔。我本來要做 多份兼職， 現在可以辭掉工作 ，專注學習。” 摩根士丹利添惠獎學金 該獎學金為商學院及工學院各一位一年級生提供相當於學費金 額的獎學金，為期三年。科大是唯一種資助的大學。該企司董事總 經理及慈善事業委員會主席馮愉敏說．“（盡管亞洲地區經濟不景，但 作為世界主要的投資銀行 ， 回饋社會是我們的長遠承擔。不論從數 額，或是從同事的參與來看，我們的慈善活動都有增長。” 憲法半導體有限公司獎學金 四位電機及電于工程學系的同學將獲意法半導體有限公司頒贈 的，000元的獎學金。科大是唯一獲捐贈的大學。該公司中亞太區人8
力資源經理梁瑞寶說， “通過獎學金 ，我們可以鼓勵同學在學術上追 求卓越，從而為香港培養高質素的人才。” 伍體貴科技教育基金獎學金 該基金會在科大設立合共14 萬元的獎學金，頒與九位理學院及 工學院的同學。科大是唯一獲贊助的大學。該基金會由伍體賢老先 生出資創立，旨在培育科技人才，資助科研項目，贊助有利於香港 社會、文化教育及科技發展的研討會、展覽會及考察活動。 香港賽馬會獎學金 馬會新設的獎學金為本港人所大專院校的一年級本科生提供三 年課程所需的學費、 學習開支及生活費資助 ，為期十年。科大有兩 位本地學生受惠2每人各獲共 29 萬元的獎學金，本年度先獲頒贈 的，000 元獎學金。 會計學系一年級的蕭雅茵說 ι “這是我第一次獲頒贈獎學金。我 的成績並不是最好的 ， 但我很用功。獎學金鞭策我專注學習，努力 讀書。我更可以找對我專業發展有幫助的暑期工，不用憂慮收入的 高，低。”沁
