Current Sino Land Chairman, Mr Robert Ng, presented the donation on behalf of his father, describing it as an investment in Hong Kong’s future.
“The facility which we propose to establish with this money will be among the first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Vice-Chancellor and President of
HKUST, Professor Chia-Wei Woo.
In using the donation to develop software engineering, HKUST has a two- part plan. First, the Department of Computer Science will establish a teaching and research facility, modelled after a very successful project at MIT. It will give students an opportunity to learn the latest software engineering techniques, and to develop software for integrating texts, graphics and video.
The second part of the plan is to establish an umbrella research unit supporting several research projects, which will involve different disciplines working together. Each project would aim to develop applications software products tailored to Hong Kong’s unique environment, and its industries’ strengths and needs.
Professor Vincent Shen, Head of the Computer Science Department at HKUST, describes one project that will take advantage of Hong Kong’s expertise I .7:)in producing multi-national business contracts. --

The project is to build a prototype software system to aid the negotiation of business contracts that involve parties residing in different countries with different languages and legal systems; The prototype will take a draft contract in a given language, extract the intentions of that contract, and generate the equivalent text in a second language for study by the second party. A successful system will enable legal personnel to rapidly convert the draft into a final contract. Software products which evolve from this system can be marketed around the world.
