(A) Do you know that jogging regularly is good for your memory? Scientists at Cambridge University have shown that running makes the brain grow fresh grey matter and it has a big effect on mental ability.

According to their research, a few days of running led to the growth of hundreds of thousands of brain cells that improved the ability to recall memories without confusing them, a skill that is very important for learning and other cognitive tasks,

(4)

researchers said. P. 4 The new brain cells appeared in an area that is linked to the formation and recall of memory. The work reveals why jogging and other aerobic exercise can improve memory and learning, and potentially slow down the failure of mental ability in old age.

Scientists are unsure why exercise causes the growth of grey matter, but it may be linked to increased blood flow or higher levels of hormones that are released while exercising. In an experiment, they studied two groups of mice, one of which had unlimited access to a running wheel throughout. The other mice, remained sedentary, formed another group.

After training sessions, the mice in the exercising group scored almost twice as highly as the other mice in a repeated memory test for a sugar reward. On the other hand, the sedentary mice gradually worsened at the test. To sum up, exercising regularly not only can help us lose some extra fat, but it can also help us build up better memory. So before each exam, besides studying at your desk, try going for a run every day, and you may be surprised by how much more you can remember from your textbook!

43. What does the word “sedentary” probably mean?

(A) Unemotional. (B) Unhappy. (C) Unsafe. (D) Inactive. 44. According to this passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

(A) The mice were divided in three different groups in the experiment.

(B) We can never slow down the worsening of our mental ability caused by old age.

(C) Grey matter might play a very important role in the formation and recall of our memory. (D) Researchers have found out the reason why exercise helps the growth of grey matter. 45. What is the best title for this article?

(A) Mice Help Improve Our Memory

(B) Start to Forget Things? Try Jogging Every Day! (C) Being a Runner Cures All!

(B) Have you ever seen pictures of Dalmatian dogs riding on the fire trucks of long ago? One hundred years ago, these beautiful dogs with white fur and black spots were a common sight on horse-drawn fire engines. Why were these dogs chosen by the firefighters to be their traveling companions?

Dalmatians, a lean, shorthaired dog, are best known for their lovely white coat of fur and their unique black or brown spots. For hundreds of years, Dalmatian dogs have been a great helper to people. Long ago, Dalmatians were used as shepherds, hunters and guard dogs. Dalmatians became known as “coach dogs” because they ran along next to horse-drawn carriages and helped to drive away banditsand farm animals that may have wandered into the road. The Dalmatian lived in stables and got along very well with horses. The ability to live and work comfortably with horses is what led the Dalmatian to become a fire house mascot in the United States. Dalmatians helped to keep the road clear for the quickly moving fire trucks. They could be seen riding on the trucks or racing alongside the horses as they hurried to the scene of a blazing fire.

When cars were invented, horse-drawn carriages became less common. Dalmatians were no longer needed to help clear the path for the quickly moving horses. Even though we no longer use Dalmatian dogs on fire engines, we should not forget the important job that these hard-working dogs had in the years before the invention of the car. Dalmatian dogs are truly one of human’s best friends!

46. Which of the following statements is NOT true about Dalmatians? (A) They were trained as shepherds, hunters and guard dogs. (B) They are no longer needed for the US Fire Department now.

(C) They became a fire house mascot because they could live and work well with horses. (D) They can be trained to put out the fire with the help of firefighters.

47. Which is the best title for this passage? (A) Firefighters’ Best Friend

gravestone before he died. Tevfik Ensec was the only man who could read these words properly. He was the last living P. 5 speaker of a language called Ubykh.

Ubykh is just one of the languages that die out every year. This happens because languages are living things. About 6,000 languages exist in the world today, the number of which, however, is getting smaller all the time due to the steady growth of bigger languages. Currently, the Celtic languages such as Irish and Welsh are nearly extinct. What’s to blame? English. And in South America, Spanish and Portuguese are replacing other regional languages found there.

Linguists predict that at least half of the world’s languages will become extinct in the next hundred years. The world’s most dominant languages such as English, Mandarin, and Spanish are growing at an amazing speed. But is this necessarily a bad thing? Wouldn’t it be better if we all spoke the same language?

The death of a language is never a good thing. Languages are not simply words which confuse people who speak different tongues. Instead, they are connected to the culture in which they are created. As different cultures experience the world in different ways, their languages reflect this. Therefore, when we lose a language, we lose that bit of knowledge that is connected to it.

Although it would be convenient to be able to express oneself anywhere in the world, it would come at a great cost. If some day we all end up speaking the same language, we can be assured that a huge amount of wisdom will be lost.

48. What does the word “which” refer to?

(A) Living things. (B) The languages existing now. (C) Bigger languages. (D) The world.

49. According to this passage, which of the following statements is NOT true? (A) Ubykh is now a dead language.

(B) English is replacing Irish and Welsh.

(C) Portuguese is one of the most dominant languages. (D) Languages reflect cultural differences.

50. Which of the following statements can best describe the author’s attitude toward languages? (A) We shouldn’t try to stop the death of a language because it is a natural process.

(B) Speaking the same tongue helps communication, but a lot of wisdom will die with the death of minor languages. (C) To preserve different cultures around the world, we should stop speaking major languages.

(D) Linguists all over the world should be respected because they help stop the death of minor languages.

(D) Albert Einstein is rumored to have said, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left.” Today, these words are ominous because the honeybee is in danger.

A mysterious event has been taking place in the US, Europe, and here in Taiwan. It is called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), and beekeepers are reporting losses ranging from 30 to 80 percent of their bee colonies. The hives still contain honey, the queen bee, and some young bees, but no adult bees. The adult bees are not found dead outside the hives, though. They simply disappear. The cause is unknown, leaving mere suspicions about disease, chemicals, or probably global warming.

This phenomenon could have terrible consequences. Honeybees are needed to pollinate many different plants. Without them, crop yields would drop significantly and such things as Pennsylvania’s apple harvest would suffer dramatically. The estimate is that every third bite of food eaten in America relies on the work of honeybees.

Nature is a delicate balance of competition and cooperation, with countless actions by different creatures all contributing to this massive cycle of life. A remedy for CCD needs to be found before the second half of Einstein’s rumored quote comes true: “No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more man.”

51. What does the word “ominous” probably mean?

(A) Involving a lot of money. (B) Suggesting something bad may happen. (C) Being proved wrong. (D) Becoming more and more doubtful. 52. Which of the following statements about CCD is TRUE?

(A) Scientists have found out the major causes for CCD. (B) Albert Einstein discovered CCD.

(C) The queen bee is left sound and safe in the hive.

(D) The dead adult bees are usually found outside their hives. 53. What can we infer from this passage?

(6)

(B) Whether Albert Einstein really said the quote is not certain. P. 6 (C) Apples are the most important crop in Pennsylvania.

(D) The results caused by CCD may not be as serious as people think. 54. What is the best title for this passage?

(A) Where Have the Honeybees Gone? (B) The Wisdom of Albert Einstein (C) How to Deal with Problems of Bees (D) Side Effects of Global Warming
