<B> Tweeting the News

Twitter, the newest big social media website has taken on an unexpected role. Twitter is now both breaking--- and making--- the news.

To break the news means to publish a news item first. Obviously, Twitter is great for that. It gives any individual the ability to quickly publish anything he or she sees. Many people find out breaking--- that is, brand new--- news via Twitter. But making the news, changing the news, affecting the news: how can Twitter do that?

Mostly, Twitter makes news by helping people organize. Soon after Twitter started, people realized how useful it could be. For people planning protests or gatherings, Twitter was a great way to spread the word. After all, Twitter can reach more people faster than emailing or texting.

So people used Twitter to organize. That makes sense. But then people saw something even more useful: Twitter can help organize on the run. During protests around the world, from Iran to the UK and the United States, people discovered that they could tell huge masses of people where to go while they were already in the streets. People used Twitter to tell each other where roadblocks were, or where an open street was, or where police might be. Using Twitter helped them move more effectively. And in this sense, Twitter made news. They could not have organized so well or so quickly without it.

People say information is power. The Internet has always been used to spread information. And Twitter is the newest, fastest way to put power in the hands of the public.

The phrase “Remember… Dreams Come True” is the theme of Disneyland itself, the dream of a man named Walt Disney. His theme park, Disneyland, opened with this speech: “To all who come to this happy place, welcome. Disney is your land. Here, age relives fond memories of the past, and here, youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America, with the hope that will become a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.”

Inside Disneyland the themes of hope, dreams and imagination constantly appear. Back in 1959, this was the first place in the Western Hemisphere to have a monorail(train), one that operated every day. Disneyland has daily fireworks displays synchronized with Disney songs. Its total number of visitors since opening, estimated at more than 600 million, is also far greater than that of any other theme park in the world. Every day, characters from famous Disney

cartoons greet the guests and perform throughout the whole area of Disneyland. The Fantastic! nighttime show is an animated film projected onto a screen of water along with music, special effects, floats, boats, and even robots that are three stories high!

Walt wanted his theme park to be a magical and wonderful place for adults and children alike, so all the facilities can be enjoyed by the whole family. All the rides and attractions were extremely well-designed by a group of people called the “imagineers.”

Walt Disney accomplished many things that people thought were either impossible or just too ridiculous. He could never have imagined that Disneyland
