As the Chinese New Year comes, a narrow old Taipei street becomes the center of the city’s most popular New Year festival. Taipei’s historical Tihua Street, with its traditional street market, comes to life just before the big holiday and becomes a shopper’s paradise. The shops in the market begin selling holiday food and treats.

In the mid-nineties, the Taipei government began prompting the street as a historical area, and in 1996, the Big Street New Year Shopping Festival was begun. Now, up to a million people visit the jam-packed street during the 14-day festival. With New Year decorations and the sound of traditional music from loudspeakers, shoppers buy all kinds of goods, such as dried seafood, nuts, and special candies.
