[B] The cell phone has caused controversy among the Amish people of Pennsylvania over the question of

technology.

The Amish are members of a religious sect that has not moved far beyond the 17th century, when it was

formed. With their horse-drawn buggies, identical black clothes, and communal way of life, they have long symbolized the ‘Old World.”

Since the 1920s, however, they have disagreed over technology. In the 20s it was the telephone; in the 30s, electricity; and in the 60s, the car.

The Amish communities are divided into three groups according to the technology they accept. One group refuses cars, phones, and electricity altogether, another accepts these with conditions, and the third group accepts

(5)

all three without conditions.

Now telephones---this time cell phones---are again causing disagreement.

To the Amish, the group is extremely important; there, they judge technology by looking at whether it brings people together or keeps them apart.

In most Amish communities, phones are communal and used only for returning calls or for emergencies. They are usually put outside the home, along with answering machines, so they don’t distract people from their daily work or conversation.

The very things that many of us like about cell phones---they are convenient and personal---make them unacceptable to many Amish. Such technology, they argue, increases the distance between people.

And the story is not likely to end here. As technology speeds ahead, the Amish will face more things to disagree about with each other.

53. Why are the Amish a symbol of the “Old World”? (A) Because they seem to always live in the 17th century.

(B) Because they live in pretty much the same way as they did 400 years ago. (C) Because they like to wear old black clothes and they can’t afford cars. (D) Because they moved to the United States in the 17th century.

54. According to the article, which of the following statements about the Amish is NOT true? (A) Telephones and cell phones are completely unacceptable in the Amish society.

(B) Telephones and answering machines are likely to be shared throughout a community. (C) They probably disagreed with each other over electricity in 1938.

(D) Technology in the eyes of many Amish will weaken the relationship between people.

[C] Many people believe that birth order, the order that children are born into a family, can influence their

personalities. This belief is called birth-order theory.

According to the theory, most oldest children are serious and are often high achievers. They are also reliable and conscientious. Further, oldest children are more likely to work in high-status professions, such as lawyers, doctors and scientists. Many oldest children are picky and demanding---they want everything to be perfect. Perhaps it is because for the first part of their lives, their parents had a lot of time to spend with them. Therefore, these children probably feel their parents’ excitement over their every action or accomplishment, and they want to keep their parents’ attention. So, first-born children may develop a greater desire to achieve.

Middle children are the hardest children to put into a general group. They can be quiet or outgoing, motivated or lazy. The personality of middle children may depend on how they feel about their oldest brother or sister. If they want to be like their older sibling, they may also become high achievers. On the other hand, if they don’t like the oldest child or feel as though they aren’t getting enough attention from their parents, they might try to be exactly not like their older sibling. As a result, some middle children are rebellious. Further, middle children generally seem to have a lot of friends and good social skills. This might be a result of not receiving a lot of attention at home. Rather than fight for their parent’s attention, they will often look for attention in other places. The youngest child is quite different from the older children. Often, he/she is the spoiled child of the family. Normally, they are funny and carefree, but they are also more likely to be self-centered and insecure. The theory explains that by the time youngest children are growing up, their parents are often older and more relaxed. As a result, rules for this child might not be as strict as for the other children. They are also often teased by their older brothers and sisters. Therefore, they sometimes become insecure. Older siblings also often treat them as though they don’t know anything. This might be the reason why many youngest children decide to choose careers that are not thought of as success careers, such as art and entertainment.

What about an only child? Only children seem to be motivated and to feel good about themselves. They might also be shy. Both of these traits might be the result of spending a lot of time around adults. Because they receive a lot of attention from adults, they are motivated to achieve. However, not having any siblings might cause them to be shy around other children. Further, they are sometimes seen as selfish, perhaps due to the large amount of

(6)

(B) Only children might be shy and selfish because they receive a lot of attention from adults.
