Patent Approval for Pain-free Drug Delivery
I-I
KUST has beengranted its second patent by the U.S. Patent Office. The patent, awarded to Prof. Jeffrey Wong of the Department of Biochem-ish-y and Dr. Michael Tam from CUHK, a former PhD student of Prof. Wong, covers a novel drug delivery system specifically designed for
the deli,叫yof protein or peptide drugs. Protein and peptide drugs are becon加g in-creasingly important as therapeutic agents. Many widely used therapeutic agents are proteins, for example insulin, which is used in western medicine to control diabetes.
Millions of people the world over inject themselves daily with doses of insulin to help control their blood sugar levels. Replacing
those injections with a pa凶的method of drug delivery such as an inhalant is now a possib址,
ity, even if it is still a very distant one.
’,h principle it’s possible, that’sthewhole
objective of this development. But it is still a long way off," says Prof. Wong.
The basic idea is relatively simple - use a surface active agent to help the prote凶 cross
the membrane of the lw1gs and pass into the bloodstream. The 廿icky bit was to come up with a surface active agent that would not ir-ritate the membranes at the s也ne time. The answer lay within our own bodies. Lung surfactant, a naturally occurring smface active agent that facil期 testhe inflation of the lungs,
Prof. Jeffrey Wong
was found by the resear℃h group to have all the advantages 趴 helpingthe protein across the membrane, without the irritating prop缸,
ties.
Combining the protein drug with the surfactant requires a nebuliser toα·eate a mist that can be inhaled into the lungs. "In O山﹒ case, we are not treating lung conditions, we 紅E

suggested theme was ’, Edu-cation in Hong Kong九 but
later the theme was ex-tended to include almost any topic imaginable, from
environmental protection to sexual identit予 from overt political issues to private subjective experiences.
Yet the display of these boxes together does provide a collec-tive view of the spirit and state of mind of the people of Hong Kong. Exhibits of this sort also remind us that artworks are not necessar自

Maybe we have gone a bit overboard in ego-stroking here. Some of the staff have reacted as if people are going to use

Come on, guys (I have it on good authority that it is the male egos that have been deflated by the pho-tograph.ic evidence), we are not trying to claim we have the best-looking fac叫tyin Hong Kong, or the world. Maybe this is wrong. If it matters that much to the staff, perhaps it should be given a greater weight in personnel mat-ters. I could ask Personnel to ensure that next ye但·'scatch-all ad in the SCMP in-eludes the statement’,Only hunks need apply." We will have to work on the guidelines for substantiation, too. They
probably should require that candidates be "outs tan ding in one of the· following: teaching, research, and appearance’,and acceptable in the other two. That should get rid of the real dogs at least, and the rest will have to be good scholars or teachers to make up for their lack of stunning good looks.

In this summer session, manynew UG students screamed and gave sharp cries in LG7 throughout the day. They are all adults. Don't they know their behavior disturbs staff and PG students in the common areas?! Where can the staff and PG students com-plain, and how can we avoid these dis-turbances?
A
Luke Wong (DSAO) and Mike Hudson (DEMO): "Students, when organ-izing large-scale functions on campus, are always reminded not to generate exces-sive noise which may cause nuisance to others on campus. In general, our stu-dents are considerate and well-behaved. The more noisy activities are often held away from teaching facilities and residen-tial quarters. The screams and sharp cries that emerged occasionally in the few weeks immediately before the new aca-demic year were part of the natural and enthusiastic expressions of the hundreds of new students taking part in orientation activities. Last summer, we had no fewer than 25 orientation camps. Most were held on campus. We are happy that our students are taking an active part in cam-pus life. We will keep on reminding them not to generate excessive noise. Com-plaints can be directed to either the Stu-dent Affairs Office or the Security Office."Q
I am a Junior Staff Quartersresi-dent and would like to know if the lawn
area near the quarters will be used for future parking areas. We often have
dif-ficulty in finding a space, which leads
some to park illegally at the entrance
gate. EMO has advised us to park at
Senior Staff Quarters, but it's far and I feel unsafe using the pedestrian tunnel at night.
A
Mike Hudson (DEMO): "A pro-posal to secure funds for the conversion of the grassed area into a carpark was put by EMO to the Minor Works Priority Com-mittee earlier this year. The request was assigned a low priority by the Committee and, with $20 million of requests compet-ing for $11 million in available funds, it will not be possible to carry out the work this financial year."It has recently become apparent that
by no means all residents would support the proposal as a piece of grass near the residence is an important and valuable as-set for family recreation. It would be ap-preciated if JSQ residents would send their views by e-mail to eostuenq."

Union Victory
S tudents' Union president Francis Lo Tat Chi called it the "main dish" of the 11 October Senate meeting.
For more than one hour, the third-year Chemical Engineering student debated, cajoled and finally convinced the University's top aca-demic policy~making body to amend its dis-missal policy.
SU-proposed changes will give students more opporttmities to improve their perform-ance before facing dismissal, and a broader defi-nition of poor academic standing.
Lo expressed his opposition to the policy proposed by the Corrunittee for Undergraduate Stt1dies at the first Senate meeting he attended in his capacity as SU president last April.
"I was a nervous newcomer sitting in the
7th-floor Cotmcil Chambers next to deans and department heads and high-level academic staff," Lo recalls.
But his nerves were kept in check by his firm belief that he is among equals in the Senate.
"We are all members. I am free to discuss, to
argue," he says.
Despite the SU's clearly stated opposition in April, the CUS submitted the same proposal to the October meeting.
When Lo realized the dismissal policy had not been amended to reflect SU views, he de-cided to propose an amendment. The Senate
meeting was only a week away. In that short time, the SU held a forum for stt1dents to discuss the SU amendment and Lo privately lobbied
sev-era! faculty members on the changes.
At the recent Senate meeting, it was up to Lo to defend his proposed amendments.
He expressed the Stt1dents' Union's widely supported belief that it was unfair for a stt1dent to be considered in poor academic standing for failing a core course or comses.
"I quoted one department's curriculum from the Academic Calendar. Ten of 11 courses
the first-year stt1dents must take are classified as core courses. If a student fails one, should that be grounds for disrnissal?" Lo argued.
A clear majority of the Senate agreed with him on this point and passed his amendment, to his obvious delight and relief.

MinorWorks Priority Committee
