V Reading Comprehension (22%)

Vandana Shiva will never forget a lesson she learned at the age of 13. Her parents insisted that she should wear clothing made only of homespun cotton. One day, Vandana, having returned from a boarding school to her home, demanded a nylon dress, the fashion followed by her rich friends. Her mother agreed, “If that is what you want, of course you shall have it,”she said. “But remember, your nylon dress will help a rich man buy a bigger car. And the cotton you wear will buy a poor family at least one meal.” Did she buy the nylon dress? Of course not! Maybe this experience led to her resolution to fight for social justice in her later years.

Now over 60, ever visiting Taiwan in 2010,Vandana‘s main concern these days is how to preserve Indian traditional crops. This is severely attacked by many global companies. They encourage farmers to grow so-called yielding crops; many farmers, therefore, turn to high-tech methods and depend on bioengineered seeds, chemical fertilizers and pesticides. As a result, hundreds of traditional crops are disappearing. Contrary to expectation, high-tech agriculture can’t rescue Indians from starvation. Bioengineered seeds are expensive and cannot adapt to local conditions. Hundreds of Indian farmers have committed suicide during the past few years because of failed harvests.

But there is hope. Many farmers are returning to traditional methods promoted by Navdanya, an organization based in New Delhi that Vandana helped found 20 years ago. Navdanya encourages farmers to produce native varieties of crops that can be grown with natural fertilizer

and no artificial chemicals. It also helps local farmers form their own self-supporting organization and seed bank.

Navdanya has shown that in some areas, organic farmers can achieve high yields at little cost to the environment. Navdanya provides an alternative approach to modern farming. Vandana advised us to be more humble in the care of our environment. “You are not Atlas carrying the world on your shoulder,”she says. “It is good to remember that the planet is carrying you.”

(B) Many Indian traditional crops are disappearing because farmers grow non-organic crops. (C) High-tech agriculture is not a solution to the problem that Indian farmers face.

Overusing our brain makes us feel stressed out and exhausted. Some food can make the brain function better. Blueberries are known to help protect the brain from oxidative stress and may reduce the effects of dementia. A study on rats found that diets rich in blueberries

dramatically improved both the learning capacity and motor skills of aging rats, making them mentally equivalent to much younger rats.

Nuts and seeds are terrific sources of vitamin E, which can help prevent cognitive decline as your age. And it is not just your brain that benefits from almonds, walnuts, cashews, Brazil nuts,

pistachios, and peanuts. Your heart will be happier, too. Nuts have been linked to a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat, which contributes to healthy blood flow. This helps every organ in your body –particularly the brain and the heart. Avocados also lower the blood pressure. Because high blood pressure can impair cognitive abilities, lowering blood pressure helps to keep the brain in top form. The fiber in avocados also reduces the risk of heart disease and bad cholesterol.

Whole grains such as brown rice, whole wheat, oats, and barley also enhance the flow of blood to the brain. They contain more intact nutrients than processed white flour, including vitamin E, antioxidants, and fiber. When these work together to increase blood flow, the integrity of brain cells is better preserved.

The last one may surprise you. A cup of coffee before a big exam can help your brain perform at its best. That is because caffeine improves short-term memory and speeds up

reaction time. Studies have also linked caffeine to a lowered risk of Alzheimer’s disease. But do not over do it---too much caffeine can make you jumpy and irritable.

55 What does the word “dementia” in paragraph one most likely mean?

(A) A kind of virus. (B) Brain disease. (C) A kind of brain food. (D) Learning capacity.

56 Which is not mentioned in the passage as a food that makes the brain function better?

(A) Whole grains. (B) Avocados. (C) Coffee. (D) Raspberries. 57 What can we infer from the passage?

(A) Coffee can effectively prevent Alzeimer’s disease and other brain illness. (B) Choosing the foods mentioned in the passage will not ensure your brain health. (C) Nuts, avocados and whole grains are all helpful to our brain health.

(D) Eating too many blueberries can lead to high blood pressure and dementia. 58 What is the author’s attitude toward coffee as a brain booster?

(A) Disapproving and anxious. (B) Approving and supportive. (C) Tentative and hesitant. (D) Troubled and vexed.

Antarctica and the Arctic region are the southernmost and northernmost areas on Earth. These extremely cold areas have been the destination for many scientific explorations.

Antarctica surrounds the South Pole. It is the coldest of the seven continents. Masses of ice and snow about one mile thick cover most of Antarctica’s land. It is the most desolate place on earth. Few plants can survive in its extreme cold, and its only wildlife lives on the coast. There is no sunlight at all for months at a time in Antarctica. Because it is so cold, little snow falls in this area. The South Pole only gets four to six inches of snow each year. However, the existing snow is packed so heavily and tightly that it has formed into a great ice cap. This ice cap covers more than 95% of Antarctica.

It is probably not surprising that there are no cities or towns in Antarctica. In fact, no people live there permanently. Since Antarctica was discovered in 1820, many teams of scientists and explorers have braved its cold to learn about this interesting piece of land. Although very little grows in Antarctica, the seacoast does have a variety of animal life. Whales, seals, penguins, petrels, and fish are among the animals that live in and near Antarctica’s coastal waters. All of these animals depend on the sea for food and shelter.

Unlike Antarctica, the Arctic is a permanent home for many people. About 90 percent of all Arctic lands are free of snow and ice in the summer-except for Greenland. Although the sun never shines on much of the Arctic during the winter, it does shine on all parts of this area for at least a little while each day from March to September.

As in Antarctica, little plant life can survive in the Arctic. It is plagued by not only cold but also wind, a lack of water, and the long, dark winters. Willow trees do grow in the far end of the Arctic but only a few inches high. A permanently frozen layer of soil called “permafrost” prevents roots from growing deep enough in the ground to properly anchor plants.

Because it’s warmer than Antarctica, the Arctic is home to animals such as reindeer, caribou, bears, and sables. These animals live in pastures all over the Arctic. The seacoast is home to many birds, including ducks, falcons, geese, and loons.

59 What does the word “desolate”in paragraph two most likely mean? (A) Abandoned. (B) Lifeful. (C) Thriving. (D) Impedimental. 60 According to the passage, which is NOT true?

(A) The Arctic goes through periods of time when there is no sunlight at all. (B) Antarctica goes through periods of time when there is no sunlight at all.

(4)

(C) Antarctica has no plants because of the permafrost that blocks the roots. (D) The Arctic has many animals because there is no ice cap covering most of it. 61 Which is NOT a reason why more people live in the Arctic permanently instead of

Antarctica?

(A) The weather in the Arctic is warmer and easier to survive. (B) There can be months when there is no sun in Antarctica. (C) Antarctica has more animals than the Arctic.

(D) Most of the Arctic does not have ice and snow in the summer. VI Translations (13%)
