B. Read the following selection and answer the questions
The Brutal beating inflicted on Rodney King and the acquittal of the policemen responsible for it show the United States to be a nation as divided as ever by racial and social fear, mistrust and animosity.
Regardless of how we assess the police, the trial or the jury, most of the Americans simply do not believe that these injustices would have occurred if Rodney King had been white, or if either the arresting officers or if either the arresting officers or the jury had included African-Americans. Marginalized Americans live a life of rage, despair, bitterness, and alienation. Whatever its cause or explanation, exclusion breeds violence and indifference to law. People disagree endlessly about who or what is responsible for exclusion and violence; individual or society, nature or culture, corrupt government of people. These politicized debates hide what we already know as part of their common democratic heritage. The American dream is a dream of individual responsibility and equal opportunity.
Without the willingness and ability of a person to take responsibility for his or her life, opportunities and resources are washed. Similarly, without sufficient opportunities and resources, individual responsibility spins out of control and cannot function.
Thus, as citizens, they have always been willing to take some measure of collective responsibility for the American Dream--for caring and assuring that all of their children and citizens have assuring that all of their
children and citizen have sufficient education, economic, social and political opportunities to live with dignity. They will not let the dream die.
As citizens of a modern democracy, their fates are intertwined. In the wake of the shocking events surrounding the case of King, they might their moral integrity as Americans by starting again to think about how to rebuild their common institutions and way of life so that every American has full opportunity for a responsible and worth-while life.
