John is reading an article in a magazine. Read it carefully and choose the best answers for the questions.
Yesterday, I received an e-mail from Tommy.
I think Tommy has taken in too many calories. We will put on weight easily if we eat too much junk food and do not do exercise regularly.
To lose weight, we should have a balanced diet and do regular exercise. A balanced diet means having a proper amount of food. Do not eat too much or too little. We should also eat different kinds of food.
It is good to do at least thirty minutes of moderate exercise every day like cycling, jogging or doing housework. Doing exercise can help burn calories. We should avoid taking a nap right after meals. Do not sit still either. Go for a walk after meals. It helps burn calories too.
I hope my advice is helpful to Tommy. Having healthy habits will help you keep fit. If you have any questions about health, send me an e-mail.
I am very upset. My classmates are always laughing at me.
They call me ‘Fatty’. My mum said I have eaten too many sweets and potato chips. But I like eating them when I watch TV. She also told me to do more exercise, but when I have nothing to do, I would rather go to sleep until dinner.
Dr. Smart, please tell me how to slim down. Thank you.

(12 marks) Alex is reading a text about fake shark’s fin soup. Read it carefully, then choose the best answers for Questions 23-27 and complete Question 28.Fake Shark’s Fin Soup
By Tommy Leung
Fake shark’s fin soup, or wun tsai chi, is one of the all-time favourite Hong Kong street foods. It is made with glass noodles mixed with other ingredients in a type of chicken soup. It looks thick and tastes salty.
Hong Kong people have enjoyed the soup as a snack since the 1950s. It was a kind of popular food from street vendors. At that time, people were poor and could not afford to buy expensive shark’s fins from Chinese restaurants. Some smart vendors came up with a new idea. They mixed different ingredients in a pot of chicken soup. The taste of the thick, brown soup is like the real shark’s fin soup.
To make the soup, you first put the chicken into boiling water for five minutes, then drain and slice it. Next, boil some sliced mushrooms and pork in the chicken soup for ten minutes. After that, you can add some glass noodles, bean curd sheets and crab meat. They can absorb the flavour of the chicken soup.
What is so special about the making of the soup? What makes it thick and brown? The key is to add cornflour to make the soup thick. After that, you can put in some dark soy sauce to get the brown colour. Then, the delicious, famous soup is ready to serve!
Nowadays, some people choose fake shark’s fin soup to show they care about endangered animals. They do not want more sharks to be killed for their fins. Let us all make a more shark-friendly choice from now on!
