(12 marks) Carl is reading an article about being a good pet owner. Read it carefully. Choose the best answers for Questions 23–27 and complete Question 28.

How to Be a Good Pet Owner

Many people like to keep pets at home but not everyone knows how to take good care of them. If the same goes for you, do not worry. Being a good pet owner requires a lot of work. Here are some tips for you.

(i)

First you need a good environment for your pet. It is important to think of their needs. For example, dogs are very active. They require a lot of space to move around. You will have a lot of broken furniture if you keep a big dog in a small flat. You also need to give it plenty of exercise too so you need a leash for your dog.

(ii)

Pets get nervous when they are left alone for too long. When this happens, they begin to behave badly. To avoid this, make sure you give them enough exercise in the morning before you go off to school or work. Then spend some time with them when you are home at night. Also research shows that petting animals makes most people happier. Therefore spending time with your pets will make both you and your pets happier.

(iii)

Pets, like people, get sick sometimes. However pet owners usually do not find out until their pets are seriously sick. Therefore you should take your pet to the vet for regular check-ups even when your pet looks healthy. Most pets get stressed when they realise they are going to the vet. You can give your pet its favourite treat or go for a walk before going to the vet. This will distract it from worrying about visiting the vet.

(iv)

In short, owning a pet requires a lot of attention. You have to take care of it for the rest of its life. It is a huge responsibility but it is very rewarding if you are ready for it. Remember to always think about what is best for your pet and you will be a good pet owner.
