Health psychology is an emerging area of psychology concerned with “ contributions of the discipline of psychology to the promotion and maintenance of health, the prevention and treatment of illness, the identification of etiologic and diagnostic correlates of health, illness and related dysfunction, and the improvement of the health care system and health policy formulation”( American Psychological Association, 1985).

This course will cover several major theories of health psychology, including stress theories( e.g., Transactional model of stress” ), health behavior theories(e.g., Transtheoretical model of behavioral change).

Finally, the role of psychology in the health of women, ethnic minorities, and families will be examined.

2. To understand and critically evaluate key theories and models of health psychology

3. To critically evaluate health psychology research.

4. To learn about the psychology in the health of special population.

評分方式 Class participation: 10 points Midterm exam: 30 points Final exam: 35 points Literature review paper: 25 points

Requirements:

1. Regular attendance and active participation is expected and required

for this class. Any absenteeism should be reported directly to the

instructor. Any student missing more than two lectures will not receive class participating points. Exceptions are medical or other well documented emergencies.

2. Midterm and final exams based on lectures and text materials.

3. Students will complete a term paper on an area of Health Psychology that is of interest to them. The topic must be pre-approved by the instructors. The paper should be 10 pages in length( without reference) and conform to APA formate.
