一、

研究、教學、科技研發與管理工作全程經過概述。

(由受聘人填寫)

Please summarize the entire research, teaching, or science and technology R&D and management work process (To be completed

by the employee)

The Digital Lifestyles Centre (DLC) at the University of Essex has existed for some years now, to manage the living lab testbeds used by the various research groups at Essex (including the iSpace and iClassroom). The purpose of this project was to investigate opportunities for joint collaboration with the Touch Center at NCKU, particularly in the research domain of the smart classroom. This is building on the previous workshop held at NCKU in October 2011 around the theme of ‘Smart Cities’, and also the links between the 2 institutions through the European Network of Living Laboratories.

This project had the following schedule of activities: 3/26~3/30 Arrival and Paper Work

First Talk (discussion panel) about Smart Classroom in U. of Essex Arranged by Prof. Gardner. Introduced Essex’s Smart Classroom in detail. 4/02~4/06 Joint meetings with EECS College: (Technology Works) Prof. Yang, Chu-Sing, Prof. Wang, Jhing-Fa, and Prof. Tseng, Shin-Mu Second Talk (discussion panel) about Smart Classroom in U. of Essex Arranged by Prof. Gardner

4/09~4/13 Joint Meetings with Design College: (Design Works) Prof. Jeng, Tay-Sheng and Prof. Chen, Chien-Hsu

Third Talk (discussion panel) about Smart Classroom in U. of Essex Arranged by Prof. Gardner

4/16~4/19 Joint Meeting with Touch Center: (Integration works) Prof. Yang, Jar-Ferr, and Prof. Cheng , Sheng-Tzong

Final discussion panel about Join-developed Smart Classroom

During this time Dr. Gardner was able to have a number of discussions with Professors and students in a variety of departments at NCKU. He was also able to see in more detail the research work being undertaken in the NCKU smart classroom and related areas. The following activities were identified during this visit for further investigation:

1. Establish the research infrastructure to enable closer working between U.Essex and NCKU. For example, it should be possible to utilize the Mixed Reality Teaching and Learning (MiRTLE) system developed by U.Essex to allow for joint teaching and collaboration/meetings to take place between the two institutions. An action should be taken to setup and test this connection to enable more close inter-working in the future.

2. Explore opportunities for research student co-supervision and collaboration. It became apparent that through the various meetings with researchers at NCKU that there are a number of opportunities for joint collaboration of research students, particularly in the area of mixed-reality teaching and learning. This would be a good way to cement closer collaboration between the two institutions.

3. Explore opportunities for collaborative projects. U.Essex will continue to explore funding in Europe (eg. EU Framework Programme, EPSRC, etc) to support new projects that enable closer research collaboration with NCKU.

4. Setup joint workshops to enable further research discussions to take place. Following on from the success of the NCKU workshop in October 2011, U.Essex has now signed a memorandum of understanding with 6 southern Taiwan universities (including NCKU). Following the subsequant workshop in the U.Essex in April 2012, we are now hoping to organize the next workshop in Taiwan in 2013.

5. Explore opportunities for joint teaching initiatives. This should build on item (1) and we hope to explore opportunities to carry out remote teaching between U.Essex and NCKU. There particularly appears to be clear synergies between NCKU

(2)

and U.Essex in the domains of Digital Lifestyles, smart living, and e-learning.

6. Explore further opportunities for staff and student exchanges. We should aim for more students and Professors from both NCKU and U.Essex to spend time at each other’s institutions, to help cement closer research collaboration. This should aim to exploit the relative strengths of each institutions research infrastructure ie. the iSpace and iClassroom and U.Essex, and the Touch Center and SmartClassroom at NCKU. In particular Dr. Gardner hopes to continue building on this initial visit by making further visits to NCKU in the future.
