【57-59】

Stepping out of the plane in Taipei, I had no idea whether I would enjoy the life in Taiwan, or at least get used to it. Everything was new, exciting, and very different. These are some things I knew after living in Taiwan for two years. Some are cool (food!), some interesting, and still others just very strange. Here are 5 things you would never know until you live on this island. Let's get started.

1. There Are Few Public Trash Cans

In order to keep the streets clean and cockroach-free, few trash cans are placed on the streets. If you decide to get rid of any trash, you will probably have to carry it to the nearest MRT station, or even to your home. Clearly, a lack of trash cans has surely helped create a cleaner city. It's not practical, but it works!

2. Garbage Trucks Play Beethoven

Living in Taiwan, you have to agree that garbage is a big deal. Garbage from households should be put in city-approved trash bags. Garbage trucks drive through every neighborhood, and people carry their bags of trash to the street and put them into the trucks themselves. Waiting for the garbage truck is one way of Taiwanese social life. Many people go out earlier and have a chat with their neighbors while waiting until they hear the music, Beethoven's "Fur Elise", played loudly from the garbage truck. What an interesting sight it is!

3. The Best Street Food in Asia

Taiwan is a true food paradise. Even the smallest stand on the street, which has no seating besides a couple of plastic chairs, may serve you the most delicious meal. When you ask to have it taken away, you will get it in a clean paper box without questions. What’s more, you get to try some of the best snacks at a low price and discover one of the biggest passions of Taiwanese people: their food.

4.

There are 24-hour convenience stores everywhere, even in small villages. For all that expect the American chain stores — they will be surprised! Taiwan's 7-Elevens are far from just another junk food shop. A Taiwanese 7-Eleven is one of the most convenient places on the planet; you can get train tickets, pay your school tuition, ship packages, print documents, call a taxi, and so much more.

Once I asked if I could leave my backpack there for a few hours, and the answer is “Yes!”

5. Everyone Is So Friendly!

Taiwanese people are the friendliest people I have ever met. They are really welcoming and always ready to help you when they see you getting lost and struggling with a map. Sometimes, they will even personally guide you to where you want to go, (even though they often don't even know where you want to go). You might still be lost, but in the best company!

And what else surprises you about living in Taiwan? Write them down and let me know!!

57. The meaning of “get rid of ” is ”_________________”.

(A) wipe out (B) give away (C) throw away (D) put out 58. Which could be the title of the fourth point?

(A) 7-Eleven: Your New Company (B) 7-Eleven: A Helpful Neighbor

(C) 7-Eleven: Adults’ Wonderful Supermarket (D) 7-Eleven: The Best Place to Lose Your Wallet 59. Who might be the writer of this article?

(A) The one who was born and grows up in Taiwan.

(B) The one who likes to take lots of photos in Taiwan.

(C) The one who stays in Taiwan just for a vacation.

(D) The one who has great living experience in Taiwan.
