During the time in NCK several projects and tasks were carried out and accomplished

Task 1: Develop novel material for Terahertz (THz) Task status

 Up to now, biobased material (CNC) is developed as a thin film using tape casting for different weight percent of CNC and amount of Glycerol added.

 Our studied have shown that CNC thin film is optically transparent and birefringent in visible and NIR range. Several thin CNC composite films (~ 50 microns thick) were successfully fabricated using shear casting, randomly tape casting and electrospinning.

 Vertically set up of electrospinning apparatus to spinning out CNC-based materials and nano particle materials with aiming to produce nanofiber to use for optical sensor, THz and optical applications is completed.

 Optical characterization to create intensity orientation map of CNC based materials (thin film) is completed. The method can be applied to others polymers or other materials particular polymer thin film and the results of this technique is included in the conference paper.

 Three conference papers are accepted and will be presented in November 2014.

 One presentation and one poster to be presented at ISOT 2014 in November.

Ongoing and continues

 Images characterization by SEM, FTIR of CNC based/polymer materials is ongoing.

 Continues improve processing and look at variables to product composite nanofiber and patterned composite nanofiber. Once optical composite nanofiber fiber is produced they will be microfabricate to biosensor.

Task 2: Processing and fabrication of novel based CNC for Terahertz (THz) application Task status

 Looking at inject printing to print different CNC/polymer based materials with aiming to find different processing techniques to produce and developed novel materials to develop new sensor and devices. Frist trail of inject printing of different composition of CNC is done.

 Using spin coating to develop uniform and thin layers materials with aiming to produce novel

material with improving optical properties.

Ongoing and continues

 Continues to use inject printing, spin coating, tape casting and electrospinning and also look at parameters/way to improve composites/film quality, and improving optical (and/or mechanical properties)

Task 3: Proposals development Task status

 Developing and working on a proposal of CNC based nanofiber with guidance from Dr. Wei- Chih Wang that submitted to NSF in November, 2014

 Developed and completed a proposal that submitted to RRF UW in September 2014 with guidance from Dr. Wei-Chih Wang.

 Organized and chair a special section on CNC in ISOT 2014

 Coordinating with researcher/leader in the field of biobased materials to invited them for participating in the conference to exchange ideas

For the next 6 months to year

 Continues on developing new proposals and novel materials for using in biosensor, Thz and to fabricate an optical nanofiber into biosensor

 Fabricating new passive and active composites thin film and composite nanofiber material

 Studying and designing a different biosensor and finding different methods and microfrabrication processing to make biosensor

 Developing and performing analytical model and simulation to guide CNC experiment and to predict properties (mechanical and optical) for CNC-based composite nanofiber

 Continues on preparing papers

Yes, the expected goal of the recruitment has been reached based on the performance assessment.

What are the methods, professional knowledge, and progress of the research, teaching, or R&D and management work?

The project is expected to be completed in three years. 80% of the first year proposed research work has been completed. However, the remaining work requires the employment to be extended to the end of 2014.

(3)受延攬人之研究或教學或科技研發與管理成果對該計畫(或貴單位)助益如何?

How have the research, teaching, or R&D and management results of the employed person given benefit to the project (or your unit)?

The new materials developed by the research associate will provide much needed composite polymer for the proposed project.

Currently several patents are in preparation and will be filed the end of the year. The ultimate goal is to commercializing current scientific research to benefit the NCKU MDIC.

How has the employed person, during his or her term of employment, benefited your unit or the relevant domestic academic field?

The employed person has a very specialized area that is currently not available in Taiwan. His know-how will provide a new area of research in cellulose application in THz and high radio frequency biomedical research.

The past nice month research has produced very significant results. The outcomes have resulted in three conference publication and two journal papers. One NSF and one UW internal proposal were submitted and one or two patents are likely to be filed the end of the year upon funding availability.
