American pop sensation Lady Gaga held a mini-concert to promote her new album at the Taichung Arena, yesterday, attracting thousands of fans, some of whom dressed up in unique “Gaga” fashion, queuing up and camping out at the venue from as early as yesterday midnight.

After spending one day in Taipei, Lady Gaga arrived yesterday at 3 p.m. in Taichung, where celebrations for the newly designated “Lady Gaga Day” were already in full swing:

streets were lined with flags welcoming Lady Gaga's visit, youths walked around in the Gaga-style that causes heads to turn, traffic around the concert venue had been packed

since early morning, and those who dress up Gaga-like or provide Gaga-related products (albums, posters, and concert tickets alike) will receive special lodging offers at local hotels.

Taichung Mayor Jason Hu warmly welcomed Lady Gaga and presented her with a key to the city, an ink and wash portrait of Lady Gaga in a cheongsam, and an aboriginal wood sculpture, explaining that in the Atayal tribal tongue, “Gaga” means love and respect between nature, human beings, and spirits.

Lady Gaga appeared touched and appreciative when a group of Atayal children danced and sang one of her songs — dropping to her knees and hugging the children.

Only 50 seats were available at the welcome party, and were awarded to the most elaborately dressed Lady Gaga fans. Strutting on a catwalk in front of a screaming and cheering audience, the “little monsters,” as Lady Gaga fondly calls her fans, displayed costumes that ranged from a meat-themed bikini to a dress made from “ghost money.”

While some contestants wore 25 cm-high heels and exaggerated eye makeup, one diehard fan went out of his way and included a pig's head as part of his costume, reminding people of the raw beef outfit Lady Gaga once wore in a concert.

Another impressive costume was a combination of a white mask with an outfit made out of “ghost money” — paper money traditionally burned in religious events in memory of the deceased in Taiwan. This fan explained his creativity was inspired by Lady Gaga — to stay courageous even in the face of death. Children are not immune to Lady Gaga's charisma, either; quite a few of them were seen dressed up fancily, accompanied by their parents.

When fans questioned when she would hold a full-blown concert in Taiwan, Lady Gaga promised that she would add Taiwan to her world tour list, as she was deeply impressed

(3)

by how friendly and passionate her fans, and Taiwanese people in general, have been, she said.

At 8 p.m. last night, 4,000 lucky fans entered the Taichung Arena for the mini-concert, which expanded from the original set of four songs to nine, during which Lady Gaga changed through three sets of outfits. Over 40,000 fans crowded outside the venue to view a live broadcast screen, with children standing on parents' shoulders to watch the concert unfold, while teenagers brought ladders and climbed high, craning their necks.

Two seriously ill men, John and Robert, were sharing a hospital room. John’s bed was next to the room’s only window. He could sit up in his bed to help drain the water from his lungs. Robert, however, had to spend all his time lying flat on his back. The men did not have much to do, so they chatted for hours on end about everything, including their families, their professions, and even their military service.

Every afternoon when John was sitting up, he would tell Robert about the things outside the window. He said that the window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. There were ducks swimming on the water and groups of children sailing their toy boats. Young couples strolled arm in arm among trees and flowers, and mountains could be seen in the distance. With John’s description, Robert could imagine the greatest view that he had ever seen. Although John’s health was worsening, he never stopped sharing these wonderful sights with his roommate.

Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths but discovered that John had passed away peacefully in his sleep. Sadly, she asked someone to take him away.

As soon as he had enough energy, Robert asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse helped him gladly. After making him comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, he lifted himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.

But as he turned to look out the window, be couldn’t believe his eyes. He found that the window faced nothing but a plain brick wall. Robert called the nurse. “Where are all the interesting people and things John told me about?” he asked.

The nurse seemed surprised. “Didn’t you know that John was blind?” she asked.

Robert was too shocked to say a word. “Perhaps he just wanted to help you,” the nurse said.

Every culture associates certain meanings with colors. For example, in English- speaking societies, the color blue is linked to sorrow, green is considered envy, and yellow is connected with cowardice. However, in some cases, the same color has

obviously different meanings in different cultures. Some interesting examples include red, black and white, which are seen differently by western and Chinese societies in terms of their meanings.

In Chinese culture, the red color is thought to stand for good fortune and happiness.

Therefore, this color is often seen in weddings, New Year’s celebrations, and festivities surrounding the birth of a new baby. While red is generally given a positive meaning in Chinese culture, in western culture it typically has negative meanings. This color is closely linked to anger (as in the expression “seeing red”) and embarrassment (as in the idiom “red in the face”). In soccer, a player who breaks a major rule is given a “red card”

and taken out of the game.

Another interesting example of how red is given a more positive meaning in Chinese than in western culture can be observed in the way the color is used in business. In Chinese stock markets, increases in share values are marked in red, while losses are indicated in green. The opposite is true in western stock markets, where dropping stock prices are marked in red. In fact, the English expression “in the red” means that a company is losing money, while being “in the black” means that profits are being made.

There are also major differences between the two cultures in the way they see black and white. In the western world, black is the color of mourning and is worn at funerals by

(4)

both men and women. In Chinese culture, on the other hand, it is the color white that traditionally has this role—although black is sometimes worn on such occasions

nowadays as well. At a traditional funeral, mourners are usually dressed in white and give white envelopes full of money to the dead person’s family. In most western cultures, on the other hand, white is associated with purity. That’s why new brides wear this color on their wedding day, though they used to wear green, which stood for fertility, or other colors.

There is more to color than meets the eyes. The next time you are at some kind of ceremony or other special events, look at the colors all around you and think about the special meanings some of them may have.

Can animals really think? Can they make decisions based on information? For years, scientists have debated these questions. Now, many of them believe that some animals have the brain power to understand new situations, make decisions, and plan ahead. The following are just a few of the many examples of animal intelligence that scientists have observed.

Dandy is a young male chimpanzee at the Wisconsin Regional Primate Center.

Recently, he did something that surprised scientists there. The scientists had buried some grapefruit in the sand. Dandy knew where the grapefruit was, but when the other chimps were in the area, he pretended that he did not know the location. Later, when the other chimps fell asleep, he went right to the spot where the grapefruit was hidden, dug it up, and ate it. Amazingly, Dandy was able to plan ahead and trick his friends.

A green-backed female heron in Japan also did something surprising. She invented a new, creative way to get her food. When she saw some minnows swimming around in a pond, she came up with a way to catch them. First, she found a twig and broke it into small pieces. Then, she took it to the pond and put it in the water. She even moved it to a place in the pond where it would attract the minnows. Finally, when the minnows swam over to the twig, she was able to catch one for her lunch. This shows how

the heron was able to make use of a tool.

At the University of Arizona, a gray parrot named Alex surprised his trainer, Irene Pepperberg. She has been working with Alex for 15 years, teaching him to talk, to name and count objects, and to answer simple questions about them. He is very good at these tasks. He even says, “I’m sorry” when he makes a mistake answering a question.

But what Alex once did outside of the laboratory was even more impressive. When he had to go to the veterinarian’s office for lung surgery, he became upset. As Pepperberg started to leave, Alex said, “Come here. I love you. I’M sorry. I want to go back.” It seems that Alex either thought he was being punished for doing something wrong, or simply felt afraid. In either case, his trainer couldn’t help but think that Alex had learned to use language to express his thoughts.

A gorilla11 named Timmy, who had lived alone for most of his life, provided another unusual example of animal behavior. Timmy was brought to the Bronx Zoo in New York to mate with Pattycake, a female gorilla who lived at the zoo. After their baby was born, it became sick and the mother and baby were taken away. The head of the zoo reported that Timmy became very upset when they left. He would neither eat nor sleep.

He even cried. He looked everywhere to see if Pattycake had returned. It certainly seemed like he had fallen in love.

In Italy, scientists showed that an octopus could learn how to perform a task by watching another octopus do it. In this experiment, an octopus who did not know how to open a jar to get to a crab inside was allowed to watch another octopus who did know how. After observing how the second octopus did it, the first octopus was able to open the jar himself. Until recently, many scientists had thought that only mammals could learn by watching others.

Stories like these raise many questions about animals and the way they think and behave. It seems that animals are capable of more than just processing information like a robot. Perhaps their behavior is the result of more than just instinct and memorized rules. Based on these observations, more scientists are concluding that animals really can think. What do you think?
