Approved Teacher Education Courses for Non-language-trained Teachers

The following teacher education courses are specially designed to help trained teachers who did not major or have not received teacher training in the respective language in meeting relevant SCOLAR requirements (As at 1 September 2021):

(A) English Language

Institute Programme

1 The University of Hong Kong – Faculty of Education

Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Educational Studies (English Language Teaching Specialism) (Added on 2-9-2004) Remarks:

Graduates of this course, who are already holders of a PGDE / PGCE / BEd or equivalent and majoring in subjects other than English, will be considered to have attained the level of language teaching methodology that is equivalent to a PGDE in language teaching as required by SCOLAR.

2 Hong Kong Baptist University – Department of Education Studies

Postgraduate Diploma in Education - English Subject Teaching and Subject Knowledge Stream (Two-year Part-time)

Programme renamed as:

Postgraduate Diploma in Education - English Subject Teaching and Subject Knowledge Stream (Revised Date: 28-12-2004) Remarks:

Graduates of this course, who are already holders of a PGDE / PGCE / BEd or equivalent and majoring in subjects other than English, will be considered to have fulfilled the SCOLAR

3 The Open University of Hong Kong^ – School Education and Languages

Certificate in Education Remarks:

There are two strands in the programme:

(1) Secondary English strand (2) Primary English strand

Graduates of any of the above strands, who are already holders of a local PGDE / PGCE / BEd or equivalent and majoring in subjects other than English, will be considered to have attained the level of language teaching methodology that is equivalent to a PGDE in language teaching as required by SCOLAR.

4 The Chinese University of Hong Kong – Faculty of Education

Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Subject Knowledge and Pedagogy for English Language Teaching)

(Added on 2-3-2005) Remarks:

Graduates of this course, who are already holders of a PGDE / PGCE / BEd or equivalent and majoring in subjects other than English, will be considered to have fulfilled the SCOLAR requirements on English subject knowledge (PGSK) and relevant teacher training.

5 Hong Kong Institute of Education* Postgraduate Diploma in Education Programmes (Primary / Secondary) (Two-year Part-time) - English Subject Knowledge and Pedagogy

(Added on 15-4-2005) Remarks:

Graduates of any of the above programmes, who are already holders of a PGDE / PGCE / BEd or equivalent and majoring in subjects other than English, will be considered to have fulfilled the SCOLAR requirements on English subject knowledge (PGSK) and relevant teacher training.

6 Hong Kong Institute of Education* Professional Development Course on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) for Native-speaking English Teachers (NETs) and Local English Teachers (LETs)

(Added on 26-11-2009) Remarks:

Graduates of this course, who are already holders of a PGDE / PGCE / BEd or equivalent and majoring in subjects other than English, will be considered to have attained the level of language teaching methodology that is equivalent to a PGDE in language teaching as required by SCOLAR.
