Tsunami Devastated the Solomon Islands

n April 2, 2007, a massive earthquake in the Pacific Ocean caused tsunami waves that devastated parts of the Solomon Islands. Theextentof the damage and the exact number ofcasualtiesare still unknown, but early reports indicated that over 40 people have lost their lives and many more are injured or missing.

The earthquake occurred atapproximately7:40 in the morning and sent a wall of water as much as 10 meters high toward the Solomon Islands that destroyed many homes and public buildings. Thousands of people have been left homeless and millions of dollars in damage has been suffered. Luckily, the earthquake itself could be felt on the islands, giving people who were aware of the dangers posed by tsunamis time toflee to higher ground. Tsunami warnings were issuedbyagencies in countries such as Japan and Australia, but authorities in the Solomon Islands were unable to react quickly enough because of the country’s close proximityto the quake; the first waves took less than 20 minutes to reach the islands.

Some of the Solomon Islands’ wealthy Pacific neighbors, including Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan, have offeredaid relief, medical teams and search and rescueassistanceto help the island nationrecoverfrom the disaster. Not until the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed over 200,000 lives were most people around the world aware of the threat posed by tsunamis. Since then, agencies around the world have been working to establish effective warning systems that will give people in affected areas time to escape to evacuate dangerzonesand get to higher ground.
