The 1999/2000 – based CPI has become available since January 2001, the consumption pattern is derived from the Household Budget Survey 98/99. In this CPI series, housing rent includes both private and welfare housing. Furthermore, CPI (A) relates to 54% of the households with an average monthly expenditure of 3,000 to 9,999 Patacas; CPI (B) accounts for 26% of the households with an average monthly expenditure of 10,000 to 19,999 Patacas.

The Composite Consumer Price Index of January 2003 was 94.45, equivalent to an increase of 0.09% compared with previous month. Owing to rising prices in outbound packaged tours, hairdressing, air tickets and fresh flowers before the Lunar New Year, the indexes of OTHER GOODS AND SERVICES, TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS and EDUCATION AND LEISURE rose by 4.71%, 0.72% and 0.35%

respectively. On the other hand, the pre-Lunar New Year Sale on clothing, falling price in fresh pork and a waiver of welfare housing rentals by the Housing Institute for the first quarter of 2003 led to decreases in the indexes of CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR (-4.15%), FOODSTUFF AND BEVERAGES (-0.21%) and RENT AND HOUSING EXPENSES (-0.16%).

The Composite CPI fell by 1.24% in January 2003 over the same month of 2002. The annual rate of change of the Composite CPI ended January 2003 decreased by 2.46%, yet the decline has been narrowed since October 2002.
