The 1999/2000-based Consumer Price Index (CPI) has become available since January 2001, the consumption pattern is derived from the Household Budget Survey 98/99. In this CPI series, housing rent includes both private and welfare housing.

Furthermore, CPI(A) relates to 54% of the households with an average monthly expenditure of MOP3,000 to MOP9,999; CPI(B) accounts for 26% of the households with an average monthly expenditure of MOP10,000 to MOP19,999.

The Composite CPI of February 2003 was 93.97, equivalent to a decrease of 0.51% over the previous month. Falling prices in outbound package tours, hairdressing and air tickets after the Lunar New Year coupled with the continuous sale on clothing pushed down the indices of OTHER GOODS AND SERVICES, CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR and TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS by 5.15%, 3.37%

and 0.58% respectively. On the other hand, rising price in LP gas led to a 0.22% increase in the index of RENT AND HOUSING EXPENSES.

The Composite CPI fell by 2.08% in February 2003 over the same month of 2002. The decline in the annual rate of change has been narrowing since October 2002, to the period ended February 2003, the Composite CPI decreased by 2.44%. The Composite CPI for January to February 2003 also dropped by 1.66%

over the same period of 2002.

CPI(A) and CPI(B) decreased by 0.23% and 0.50% respectively over January 2003.
