The Composite CPI reflects the impacts of price changes on the general population. The CPI-A relates to about 49% of households, which have an average monthly expenditure of MOP 3,000 to MOP 9,999. The CPI-B relates to about 31% of households, which have an average monthly expenditure of MOP 10,000 to MOP 19,999.

The Composite CPI for August 2007 rose by 0.50% over July to 115.72. The increment was mainly attributable to increases in the price indices of Food & non-alcoholic beverages; and Housing & fuels.

Compared with July 2007, the indices of Food & non-alcoholic beverages; Housing & fuels; and Recreation &

culture recorded notable increases of 1.20%, 0.88% and 0.54% respectively, on account of dearer prices of fresh pork and vegetables, rising charges for meals bought away from home, higher rentals for housing, increasing charges for maintenance and repair of dwelling, rising price of LP Gas, as well as higher charges for outbound package tours during Summer holidays.

Meanwhile, the indices of Communication, Clothing & footwear and Transport recorded decreases of 1.94%, 1.21% and 0.35% respectively owing to lower charges for IDD calls during Summer holidays, reduction sale of men’s and women’s clothing, as well as lower prices of gasoline.

The Composite CPI for August 2007 registered a year-on-year increase of 6.42%. The average Composite CPI for January to August went up by 5.10% over the same period of 2006. For the 12 months ended August 2007, the average Composite CPI rose by 4.85% over the previous period.

In addition, the CPI-A and CPI-B for August 2007 were 117.40 and 115.23, up by 0.57% and 0.47% respectively compared with July.
