CONSUMER PRICE INDEX

MARCH / 2007

No.3

The Composite CPI reflects the impacts of price changes on the general population. The CPI-A relates to about 49% of households, which have an average monthly expenditure of MOP 3,000 to MOP 9,999, whereas the CPI-B relates to about 31% of households, which have an average monthly expenditure of MOP 10,000 to MOP 19,999.

The Composite CPI for March 2007 went down by 0.11% over February to 111.91. The decline was mainly attributable to the decreases in the price indices of Recreation & culture; Clothing & footwear; and Miscellaneous goods &

services. However, the impacts were largely offset by the increases in the price indices of Housing & fuels; and Food &

non-alcoholic beverages.

Compared with February 2007, the indices of Recreation & culture; Clothing & footwear; Miscellaneous goods &

services; and Transport recorded notable decreases of 5.84%, 2.26%, 0.73% and 0.50% respectively, on account of lower prices for outbound package tours, air tickets and hairdressing services after the Chinese New Year, as well as seasonal sale of women’s clothing.

On the other hand, the indices of Housing & fuels; and Food & non-alcoholic beverages increased by 0.89% and 0.61% respectively, as a result of higher rentals for housing, dearer prices of fresh vegetables and rising charges for meals bought away from home.

The Composite CPI for March 2007 registered a year-on-year increase of 4.96%. For the 12 months ended March 2007, the average Composite CPI rose by 4.92% over the previous period. For the first quarter of 2007, the Composite CPI rose by 1.25% over the preceding quarter, and 4.57% over the same quarter of 2006, with notable increases in the indices of Housing & fuels (+7.89%), Education (+6.07%) and Food & non-alcoholic beverages (+5.51%).

In addition, the CPI-A for March 2007 was 113.37, up by 0.23% over February, whereas the CPI-B was 111.54, down by 0.12%.
