Starting from January 2006, the CPI has been rebased to July 2004 to June 2005. The Composite CPI reflects the impacts of price changes on the general population. The CPI-A relates to about 49% of households, which had an average monthly expenditure of MOP 3,000 to MOP 9,999; the CPI-B relates to about 31% of households, which had an average monthly expenditure of MOP 10,000 to MOP 19,999.
The Composite CPI for September 2006 was 109.32, up by 0.53% over August. The increment was driven by increases in the price indices of Education, Miscellaneous goods & services, and Housing & fuels. However, the impacts were offset by decreases in the indices of Food & alcoholic beverages and Transport.
Compared with August 2006, the indices of Education, Miscellaneous goods & services, and Housing & fuels increased by 6.06%, 1.89% and 0.53% respectively, which were fuelled by upward adjustment of school tuition fees, sundry fees and expenses of extension class in the new academic year, as well as higher rentals for housing.
On the other hand, lower gasoline prices, reduced air ticket fares and outbound package tour fees after the Summer peak season pushed down the price indices of Transport (-1.98%) and Recreation & culture (-1.29%). Attributable to seasonal sale of women’s clothing and lower vegetable prices, indices of Clothing & footwear and Food & non-alcoholic beverages recorded decreases of 1.29% and 0.56% respectively.
The Composite CPI for September 2006 registered a year-on-year increase of 4.24%. Average Composite CPI for January to September went up by 5.41% compared with the same period of 2005. For the 12 months ended September 2006, the average Composite CPI increased by 5.45% over the previous period. Composite CPI for the third quarter of 2006 rose by 4.66% over the same quarter of last year, with notable increases in the indices of Housing & fuels (+10.79%) and Education (+8.10%).
In addition, the CPI-A and CPI-B for September 2006 were 110.67 and 109.00, up by 0.79% and 0.54%
respectively compared with August.
