EXTERNAL MERCHANDISE TRADE STATISTICS

The value of total exports of goods amounted to MOP1.51 billion in June 2008, down by 19.2% year- on-year; the value of domestic exports decreased by 23.2% to MOP977 million, and that of re-exports dropped by 10.4% to MOP535 million. The value of total imports of goods amounted to MOP3.60 billion, up slightly by 0.2% year-on-year.A trade deficit of MOP2.09 billion was recorded for June 2008.
In the first half year of 2008, total exports of goods fell by 10.7% year-on-year to MOP8.53 billion, of which the value of domestic exports and re-exports went down by 11.8% and 8.7% respectively. Meanwhile, total imports of goods grew by 6.9% to MOP21.45 billion over the same period of 2007.
In the first half year of 2008, a trade deficit of MOP12.91 billion was registered; the exports/imports ratio decreased from 47.6% in the first half year of 2007 to 39.8% in the same period of 2008.
In the second quarter of 2008, the value of total exports went down by 13.5% and that of total imports grew by 1.5% over the same quarter of 2007, resulting in a trade deficit of MOP6.53 billion.

The value of Textile & garment exports in the first half year of 2008 reduced by 15.8% year-on-year to account for 59.9% of the total exports; moreover, the value of Non-textile exports decreased slightly by 1.7%, of which exports of Machines & apparatus, parts & accessories thereof and Footwear slid by 50.8%
and 56.3% respectively, while exports of Image & sound appliances rose by 69.2%.

Among the major destinations of Macao’s exports, the USA and the EU together absorbed 53.6% of the total exports of goods in the first half year of 2008. The value of exports to the USA, accounting for 42.7%
of the total, dropped by 6.3% year-on-year; meanwhile, the value of exports to the EU declined by 40.5% to take up 10.9% of the total. As regards the Asian region, the value of exports to Mainland China decreased by 40.3% whereas that to Hong Kong rose by 23.6%.

In the first half year of 2008, the value of total imports of goods grew by 6.9% year-on-year. In terms of broad economic categories, the value of imports of Fuels & lubricants and Consumer goods expanded by 30.5% and 23.5% respectively, but that of Raw materials & semi-manufactures and Capital goods decreased by 14.9% and 3.6% respectively.

The value of imports of Consumer goods not elsewhere specified (69.7% of the total imports of Consumer goods) registered a year-on-year increase of 26.8%. Among them, the value of imports of durable consumer goods (e.g. jewellery and watches) rose by 62.7%, non-durable consumer goods (e.g. tobacco and skin-care products) by 13.2% and semi-durable consumer goods (e.g. clothing and footwear) by 10.4%.

Within the imports of Raw materials & semi-manufactures, the value of textile materials (26.1% of the total) fell by 34.3% year-on-year whereas that of construction materials (28.3% of the total) increased by 24.3%.

The main suppliers of imported goods to Macao concentrated in the Asian region. The value of imports from Mainland China and Hong Kong, comprising 51.9% of the total imports in the first half year of 2008, rose by 4.9% and 9.1% respectively year-on-year. In addition, the value of imports from the EU grew slightly by 1.0%, while that from the USA dropped by 17.0%.
