A Study on the Factors Influencing the Labor Market of Taiwan 陳如蘭、張椿柏

ABSTRACT
The high unemployment rate over these years has been an issue for Taiwan’s government and people to notice and solve. Because unemployment rate is an important index of a country’s economy, high unemployment rate will cause a lot of familial and social problems; therefore, how to lower the unemployment rate is not only the focus of people’s attention but also a hard ordeal the government has to face. There has been a lot of literature of the unemployment rate, but most of it is to investigate the overall effect of factors on the unemployment rate. However, the unemployment rates of different ages may be determined by different factors.
Thus, this thesis, based on “The Investigation on the Exercise of Manpower (1996-2011)” published by the auditing department of the Executive Yuan, categorizes the unemployment rate by different ages, using the multiple regression analysis to investigate the causes of different ages’ unemployment rate in the hope of finding out the exact causes and working out the solutions. The results are as follows： The Asian financial crisis noticeably has a negative effect on the unemployment rate of all ages in Taiwan. The boom of graduates has a positive effect on the unemployment rate between age 15 and age 24. The unemployment rate between age 20 and age 49 is determined by the number of foreign workers. The economy comprehensive index has a negative effect on the unemployment rate of all ages. The middle-aged and the old age unemployment rate is affected by factors such as the total investment on China granted by the government and Taiwan’s total sum of export. Among them, the total investment on China granted by the government has a positive effect.
