Course Description:

This course is intended for students who aim to have a current and well-rounded view of the field—from theoretical rationale to evaluation, treatment, and follow-up. Emphasis of the course will be placed on evaluation and treatment for each performance component, including neuromuscular, sensory, perceptual, cognitive, and psychological function. The latter part of the course will be focusing on OT’s intervention with different diagnoses, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurodegenerative diseases, musculoskeletal

problems, arthritis, etc. Both lectures and practice of evaluation and treatment techniques will be included. The class will include discussions, peer presentations, lectures, and group

activities.

Course Objectives:

The students will be able to demonstrate:

1) The knowledge of cause, symptoms, progression, or prognosis of each diagnosis or problems commonly shown in people with physical disabilities.

2) The knowledge of relevant theory, model, framework, clinical reasoning or modalities required for clinical practice of occupational therapy for physical disabilities.

3) The knowledge required to conduct clinical evaluation and treatment commonly used in occupational therapy for physical disabilities.

4) The ability required to conduct clinical evaluation and treatment commonly used in occupational therapy for physical disabilities.

Course requirements:

Group presentation: The group presentation will be a case study. A case of stroke, TBI, SCI, or neurodegenerative disease will be assigned to each group. Further details will be given. Present the study in class on week 4,6,8, and 12. Distribute the handout to each class member. Each group has 20-30 minutes to present your study, with role-playing, oral presentation, or any other creative styles.
