Kung University -- The Logic of Composition in
Chinese Practical Writing

onceptionAssociate professors CHOU Hsiao-Ping and HSU Chang-mo of the Department of Chinese Literature had instructed students on the writing skills of technical research paper. Based on “the logic of composition”, they studied the model of Chinese grammar and the organization of writing and then proposed an instruction strategy.
II. The Course of Program
The program had proceeded for three years. We engaged in study in first two years and put into practice in the third year. In 2007 and 08, the key point of research was on analyzing syntax and writing structure. We
summarized the often used models of the logic of composition and found out common errors. The findings were compiled into several papers. In 2009, Professor CHOU delivered a course of “The Logic of Composition in Technical Research Paper”. There were 39 students taking the course. The study modules were proceeded as

follows: 1. Overview of the logic of composition in technical research paper; 2. Sentence component and structure; 3. Declarative sentence and variant sentence; 4. How to title; 5. The usage of punctuation; 6. The usage of
conjunction; 7. The usage of preposition; 8. Causal logic; 9. The logic of the fundamental and the incidental; 10. The logic of the generic and the specific; 11. The logic structure for writing an abstract; 12. The logic structure of outline. Each module includes an assessment to grade student’s outcomes and the content of course will be compiled into book.
