In the huge country of India, home to more than one billion people, there are many religious groups, each of which has its own individual food-related taboos.

One of the first things you will notice on a visit to India is that there are a lot of cows walking freely around the streets.

Often, their horns are painted bright colors, and people give them food, water, and even decorate them with flowers. This is because Hindus, India’s religious majority, consider cows to be sacred. Unlike most Western people, who really enjoy beef, Hindu Indians are not allowed to eat cow’s meat. This is because Lord Krishna, an important Hindu god, was said to be a cow herdsman. Since Lord Krishna loved and protected cows, Hindus do the same.

India’s Muslim population, on the other hand, does not eat the meat of pigs. In the Muslim tradition, pigs are considered unclean, rather than sacred. No one is quite sure why pigs became a taboo food, but it is a fact that you are much less likely to see pigs on the streets of India!

A third religious group in India with strict food taboos is the Jain population. Jains are very peaceful people, and refuse to eat anything that they believe is the product of cruelty to animals. Therefore, they do not eat meat or fish. They also don’t drink milk, or eat cheese, honey, and eggs. Many even go one step further. They will not eat root vegetables, because they believe it cruelly destroys the whole plant. Fruit, which falls from the tree naturally, thus makes up most of their diet.

One final and nonreligious taboo to remember when you dine in India is that although many dishes are eaten with the fingers, you should only use your right hand. The left hand is considered unclean since it’s used for visiting the bathroom. This is easy for everyone except left-handed visitors who might need a bit of practice before their visit!
