STUDY TOUR IN ENGLAND

I went to Edinburgh for a study trip in this summer vacation. When we first arrived, we were all surprised at the cold weather in England. Hell, the coldest temperature in

Taiwan’s winter is just the temperature in Edinburgh’s summer ( I even saw somebody eating ice-cream ). Maybe because of the cold weather, there were not sparrows but a lot gulls and crows there.

There are castle and building of ancient in a lot of in this country. The street view were very beautiful there Classic and modern combined strangely but naturally. Here has been filled with the mysterious atmosphere. I hoped to see knights and fire dragon here, it is excellent that then. All of thing we could do were grabbing our neckband tightly and started our first step.

The place we lived first week had some distance from Fettes (the school we studied in).

Fettes College was all a history and traditional school in Scotland. There was a Gothic castle and there were large stretch of meadow and a lot of green trees in school. So, beautiful！We had to walk to get bus everyday. The bus in England was different from the bus in Taiwan. There were two floors in one bus. Isn’t it a very a cool thing？ If there were also two floors in one Taiwan bus, then the problem of crowed in bus stop will be solve.

The manner of the class was relaxed in the Fettes. The language class in the morning was like the “English conversation” in Mingdao. It was interesting with knowing

international friend place. We learned grammars and England civilizable with games and free talking. Our classmates were from many different country like Italy , Spain ,

Portugal , Russia , Austria and even Japan（by the way , my roommate was a Japan names Eiitaro）. It was a good chance to make many foreign friends. Our teacher was very kind.

If we had extra times, he always led us to the grass outside and has some fun activity or read story to us. His name was Derek, I thought I won’t forget him.

Afternoon was activity time. Everyone school chose one activity like cricket, badminton, tennis, or visited some scenic spots. I joined all the athletics at first week.

And then, I visited a lot of science spots and took a lot of photos. I visited the cool

Dynamic Earth, Camera Obscura, and Modern Art Gallery. It was extraordinary high-tech and progressive mystified the people. Beside this, I went go sightseeing the quiet and peaceful Royal Botanic Garden, the classical and solemn National Museum of Scotland and Gothic church, the tower and grand Edinburgh castle, the graceful and elegant Dean

Village and a lot of another place. The British scenery was wonderful, my eyes were satisfied.

On holiday, we went to travel in the way far. Glasgow was largest city in Scotland, it was a beautiful city. There are castle and building of ancient in city, too. If you wont went go shopping？ It was the best choice, because there are many boutique and famous brand of shop in here. There are a lot of street artists in both sides of the street, there were fire- dancer, magician, the person plays bagpipes and a lot of music performance. It was full of different foreign luscious. Loch Lomnd was largest freshwater lakes in

Scotland. Its noodle was 7123 hectares. The shadow of the mountains and trees was mirroring on the lake surface. The views there are very graceful and beautiful. We just relax and enjoyed some coffee in the pleasure-boat.

I love Fettes’ grass. I love the castles in Edinburgh. I’ll miss my teachers there. And I’ll even miss the old local gentleman who had had a chess game with me. I’ve learned a lot of thing in Scotland. It’s really an unforgettable memory and experience for me.

20 天心得報告

愛丁堡的一切都與台灣有很大的不同，不管是交通規則或是都市規劃皆與台灣都市有明顯的不一樣。首先，愛丁堡的建築主要都是在原有的古老建築的基礎之下成立的，止不過將道路拓寬，並打掃得更乾淨罷了，即使是後來在找建築師設計的新城區，建築風格基本上還是維持舊式建築風格。另一個愛丁堡與台灣城市的不同就是雕像。在愛丁堡跟格拉斯哥你處處可見許多的青草地與名人雕像，而許多的烏鴉或鴿子都會在雕像頭頂上歇息或在天空中盤旋。一個都市適不適合人居住我個人認為可從與自然環境的結合以及人文藝術景觀和交通及生活便利程度來評比。就前兩項來看，愛丁堡完美而不做作的自然呈現絕對是無可挑剔，不過就便利程度而言，或許格拉斯哥與台北市的表現較為傑出。費茲學院的城堡一定要親眼看見才能體會出那種震撼，

由於蘇格蘭天氣多變，因此老師們也都特別珍惜寶貴的晴天，一旦出太陽就會帶我們到草地上上課，順便享受陽光。那裏的陽光明亮但溫和，難怪他們都那麼愛曬太陽，唯一比較難適應的是每天都要到十點多才天黑。我與許多國家的人用英文進行交談，並學習對方的語言。

這一趟旅行使我收穫良多，唯一不滿的是伙食太差，熱狗竟然用水煮

的!其餘的一切就像是一場美妙的夢。

英國,回憶,21 日

7/11 凌晨 3 點, 跟家人擁抱道別後從明道上了車前往桃園國際機場,我的 21 日英國教育之旅在夜色中正式啟程了,抱著忐忑不安的心情第一次離家那麼久,早上 7 點開始登機,經過 24 個小時的空中旅程,我們到了,到了這次的目的地-愛丁堡

愛丁堡所給我的第一映像就是個非常具有歷史背景的城市,在他們的城市裡你看不到半點由水泥鋼筋打造的建築物,取而代之的是所有建築物都是由石塊一塊一塊堆疊而成的,他們的街道也因為過去和英格蘭打仗而有了特殊的建造方式, 每條大街都是龍骨,而龍骨兩側都有小路能連到其他地方,據說是這樣子在戰爭中敵人就不能那麼容易攻過來,而就算真的攻了過來,他們的建築也是階梯狀的,可以讓他們往下逃而不會全軍覆沒,很具戰略性設計的城市呢!不同於台灣,他們的汽車都是右駕,所以過馬路時也變的要先看右邊再看左邊喔!

第 2 天正式進入了我們未來 20 天要學習的地方- Fettes College 第一眼映入眼簾的是他們那廣大的草地和茂密的樹林,步行 5 分鐘後他們學校的校舍演出現在我的眼前了,最令我驚訝的是他們的校舍不同於台灣是方方正正的建築,而是一座城堡!他們校地的廣大是我們所不能體會的,他們做每件事都有專門的場地,不像我們很多東西都要用同一個地方,我覺得這是跟我們學校差別最明顯的地方

為了依我們的能力把我們送到適合的班,我們在開始上課前先做了測驗,第 3 天我們才正式開始我們的課程,他們上課的內容跟方式跟我們也非常的不同,他們上起課來比較活潑比較偏向大家要一起討論一起想出答案而不是老師一個仁在上面學生在下面只聽老師說,在上課時老師也常常用電腦最為輔助,而如果你報告需要你也能用電腦來解釋你的報告, 感覺起來就是向在做一份很正式的報告,而回去作業也都很特別,像是要介紹你喜歡的音樂、寫一份旅行的企劃書…等等,隔天你就要把你的就要報告給所有人聽,而且是每個人都要!

一班最多也只有 15 人,而這 15 人卻能來自 4 個不同國家,所以上起課來學到的不僅僅是老師教的,還有在對談中所流露出的各國風情,每個國家都有很不一樣的口音跟特色,從他們的談吐中去想像那個國家真的是一件很享受的事! 外國的學生都不像我們台灣的那麼含蓄,他們有問題馬上舉手,需要自願者時永遠都會有人自願,這個也跟在台灣上課的感覺差很多,老師的上課也很認真,像有次下課前老師要求我們要把曾經造訪的國家寫下來,一開始都不知道為什麼要這樣做,隔天上課老是便發給我們每個人一張有著 32 道題目的單子,大家便要起來用英文交談去找出每個人曾到過哪些地方,這個活動不僅讓我們每個人都要用英文跟對方交談,而在對談間也會流露出對那個國家的想法跟旅行的點滴,而在這活動背後是老師的用心準備才有這種效果!

而下午則是依選填得方式來決定你的活動,可以踢足球、打網球、籃球、參觀博物館、美術館、美術、唱歌…等等! 每天都能選不同的活動去認識這個城市認識不同的人,而週六週日學校也都會安排去愛丁堡周圍的城市觀光,雖然都是距離愛丁堡一小時車程的城市卻都有著截然不同的特色!

當我要在日記上為 21 天的旅行寫上最後一個句點時,一股不捨如潮水般洶湧而致,21 天有人說很長,而在最後一夜我卻覺得短的可以,從第一天到達第一次接觸的國家,看著路上的西方面孔,淺酌異國的咖啡,聽著不熟悉的語言、用著不流利的語言跟來自各國的同伴們交換不同世界的文化、一起討論、一起談笑,到 21 天後的最後一天,就算是生活在不同地方的夥伴野都有了默契,一切都是如此的珍貴, 每節片段都閃耀著,但當最後一次走回宿舍時,我一個人獨自坐在宿舍外面,想著這 21 天的點點滴滴,好的事更好了,不開心的事似乎也不在那麼的不開心了,風颼颼的吹著,那霎那多希望時間永遠停在那個瞬間, 好喜歡太陽 11 點才下山、好喜歡紅色雙層巴士、好喜歡每個我遇到的人、好喜歡愛丁堡的一切,但真的好不想離開,不自覺得一滴淚從眼眶滑落沿著臉頰滴到了手背上,此刻宿舍的門開了,我擦掉眼淚起身,心一轉,路還是要走完的,我也在心中默默發誓,我一定會再次回到這裡的!這只是第一次,不會是最後一次的!

Until now, I will be in a daze toward the sky every time I sit behind the window. Days in Edinburgh passed too fast. It’s long enough for me to fulfill the unique summer vacation, but recollect the memory.

Recalling the dawn, the day on July 11^th, crew of people started out from Ming‐Dao excitingly, I didn’t have the sense of sleep on the bus. At 3:55 a.m. I held my passport in my hand, because I knew it would be an impressing journey.

I just wanted to write down the details of schedule every day. The first week of life in University of Edinburgh’s dorm opened the door to the journey in Scotland.Every morning I walked to the bus stop from drom ,the scenery on the road from the bus is good ,but the mood is different by the music from

earphones.Shops looked novel such as hair‐salon ,shoe shop , restaurants and shone along the streets .Strange faces from Scotland,Enngland,Eastent

countries,Westen countries on the sidewalks all wearing smile. The time on the bus was the most silent moment during the whole day .In the morning, I observed the morning there humming music. At night, I recollected things

happening during that day, like slides, keep playing in my mind one after another.

Agreeable days began like this.

Programs in Fettes College every morning, made me expect .After we were divided into different classes, we are no longer a crew of people from Ming‐Dao, but a few students mixed with students from different countries. Teacher Andy is nice, he had sense of humor in class, when we did not understand and asked him some quentions he always answer it patiently. Sometimes he used the Internet and pictures to explain. When we were in class, we discussed together to finish a them work, or a grammar worksheet. The team which I joined was from Japan, Russia and Spain. Until now, I still feel surprised that though students in our class came from different countries, we talk in the same language and understood each other. I can hear something fun in different countries. About the food, like Spain, the popular local food there is a kind of mixture, they cooked fast on the pan, and spread have some cheese and seafood on it. And Russian told me that the place she lives in is not near the ocean, so the most expensive food is the fish eggs we can always eat in the restaurant. The cool thing is that most expensive steak served at our western restaurant is just the one they can eat everyday.

I really like the way of teaching there. Edinburgh is near North, but to the Easters, the weather there just like the winter, it will be foggy, and what’s the worse, it often rains. So when sun comes out, teacher will take us out to enjoy the sunshine, and finish our diary. We’ll have some games through which we can communicate with others on the square or the grass. We still have some

homework there. Some times teacher will ask us to think about class song, class

cheers and the gestures. To my impression, one day our class made a newspaper about Fettes College. We used the knowledge that we just learned in the class and we were divided into groups, and finally finished our newspaper called “NG5 Newspaper”NG5 was our class name, and that why we used it. This is not the most surprising thing. To our pride, we finished our class song! The lyrics, the tune and also the film edited by the students and teacher. To keep them on our memory, we also put on the You‐Tube web side, all we need to do is type “NG5 songs”, and we can find this fantasy song we made. It’s really different, isn’t it?

Coming back to Taiwan, I found it easier for me to talk to the foreigners. I am not afraid like before and just think about that our English is not that bad. We don’t need to put so many figures of speech, just the express of speaking different languages, like breath.

And all of the friends, staffs and teachers, I thought after we left, this is the last time we hug, we stay together. This made me so sad.

Last day I cried and hugged my friends. It is because we can’t let this wonderful summer go, the power of chasing our dream!
