In September 2005, Composite Consumer Price Index was 100.21, up by 0.95% over the previous month.

Attributable to the upward adjustment of school tuition fees in the new academic year; higher housing rent and expenses of house maintenance; and rising prices in fish and other seafood, indices of Education and leisure; Rent and housing expenses; and Foodstuff and beverages rose by 6.18%, 0.67% and 0.60% respectively. On the other hand, clearance sale of summer clothing and footwear; and lower prices in outbound package tours after the summer peak season led to decreases in the indices of Clothing and footwear (-1.36%); and Other goods and services (-0.85%) respectively.

Compared with the previous month, CPI(A) and CPI(B) increased by 1.45% and 0.86% respectively.

Composite CPI for September 2005 registered a significant year-on-year increase of 5.24%. For the 12 months ended September 2005, the average Composite CPI rose by 3.63% over the previous period. The Composite CPI for January to September 2005 increased by 4.00% over the same period of 2004.

Composite CPI for the third quarter of 2005 recorded a 2.14% increase over the second quarter. In comparison with the same quarter of 2004, Composite CPI rose by 4.99%, with marked increases in the indices of Rent and housing expenses (+10.53%); Education and leisure (+4.19%); as well as Foodstuff and beverages (+3.83%).
