Summary
The purpose of this circular memorandum is to invite kindergartens, primary and secondary schools to participate in the coming educational activities and events organised, co-organised or announced by Curriculum Development Institute, Education Bureau. The educational activities and events to be organised include Exhibition on Chang’e - China’s First Lunar Exploration Programme, Invitation to Stage Enrichment Programmes (July – October 2008) for Fung Hon Chu Gifted Education Centre, “Harvard Book Prize” Programme for Secondary 6 Students in 2007/08 and Technology Education Good Practices Sharing Scheme – ‘Technology Education Student Achievement Award 2008.

Exhibition on Chang’e –
China’s First Lunar Exploration Programme
Aims / Objectives
The aim of this Annex is to invite schools to visit the Exhibition on Chang’e – China’s First Lunar Exploration Programme organised by the Curriculum Development Institute, Education Bureau.

2. Details of the exhibition are as follows:
Date: 23 January 2008 to 29 February 2008
Venue: Central Resources Centre, Podium, West Block,
Education Bureau Kowloon Tong Education Services Centre, 19 Suffolk Road, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon.
Opening Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday (Closed on Sundays and public holidays)
Contents: (i) Exhibition on Chang’e – China’s First Lunar Exploration Programme which was featured in the Hong Kong Space Museum’s “Fly Me to the Moon” exhibition from
October to December 2007;
(ii) Display of Changzheng 3A Launch Vehicle Model; and (iii) Display of relevant books and reading materials;
3. Heads of schools are requested to encourage members of their schools, especially teachers and students, to visit the exhibition. Schools are welcome to arrange for group visits. For details, please visit the website at http://www.edb.gov.hk/crc.
4. The seven display boards are enforced fibre boards which can be adhered to exhibition panels. The dimensions of each of the six boards are 75cm (W) x 137cm (H) x 0.5cm (D) and those of the remaining one are 400cm (W) x 55cm (H) x 0.5cm (D). Annex 2
Invitation to Stage Enrichment Programmes (July – October 2008)
for Fung Hon Chu Gifted Education Centre
Aims
The purpose of this Annex is to invite primary and secondary school teachers to stage Centre Enrichment Programmes and Web-based Enrichment Programmes for the Fung Hon Chu Gifted Education Centre during July to October 2008.

2. Applicants should have keen interest in gifted education. Preference will be given to those with teacher qualification, experience and training in gifted education.
i) To stage the Centre Enrichment Programmes, teachers are required to design, implement and evaluate their proposed enrichment programmes. These programmes are to be held at the Fung Hon Chu Gifted Education Centre (located at the EDB Kowloon Tong Education Services Centre) mainly on Saturdays or during school holidays. The main purpose of the programmes is to provide extended learning experience for gifted students on top of their regular classroom learning as well as for the development of teaching resources. Each programme should consist of 6-8 sessions and each session should last for about 1.5 - 2 hours. The serving targets are local gifted students from Primary 4 to Secondary 7.
ii) To stage the Web-based Enrichment Programmes, interested teachers are required to design courses, written in either English or Chinese, to be studied online by students. The programme content should include activities, lecture notes, worksheets/assignments and reference materials. The Gifted Education Section would convert the proposed programmes into web format for schools’
use. An Introductory talk (1-1.5 hours) is also required from the programme provider to advise the students the necessary preparation for their online studies. Each web-based programme should consist of 6-8 sessions and each session should last for about 1.5 - 2 hours. The serving targets of the programmes are gifted students from Primary 4 to Secondary 7.
3. The main themes of the enrichment programmes for the coming cycle (July to October 2008) will be on enhancing problem-solving skills, higher order thinking and advanced academic programmes. Please refer to Appendix 2a for the suggested topics for the coming cycle. Interested teachers may also make reference to some of the past enrichment programmes which have been developed into teaching resources and are posted on the Gifted Education Section website (http://www.edb.gov.hk/cd/ge “Learning and Teaching Resources" “Fung Hon Chu Gifted Education Centre Enrichment Programme exemplars”).
4. Interested applicants are required to fill in the “Application Form for Staging Enrichment Programmes for Gifted Students” which is available from the EDB website (address: http://www.edb.gov.hk/ “Public Form”, Form Number: EDB94) or from the “What’s New” part of the Gifted Education Section website (http://www.edb.gov.hk/cd/ge). Completed application forms must be sent, in a sealed envelope, by hand or by mail to EDB Enquiry

Annex 3
“Harvard Book Prize” Programme for Secondary 6 Students in 2007/08
Aims / Objectives
The purpose of this annex is to inform secondary schools of the “Harvard Book Prize” programme and invite schools to participate.
Details
2. The “Harvard Book Prize”, administered by the Harvard Club of Hong Kong, seeks to reach out to all local and international secondary schools in Hong Kong. The Club is prepared to award Book Prizes, i.e. one winner and two runners-up, to each school.
Recipients should be outstanding Secondary 6 students who “combine excellence in scholarship and high character, with achievement in other fields” in the 2007/08 school year.
3. School heads are encouraged to nominate and select the recipients for these prizes.
4. A Harvard Book Prize-giving Ceremony will be held on 10 March 2008 at the Lecture Theatre of Hong Kong Central Library, 66 Causeway Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Professor Harry Lewis, Harvard College Professor, Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science and former Dean of Harvard College, Harvard University, will be the guest of honour for the Ceremony.

Technology Education Good Practices Sharing Scheme
‘Technology Education Student Achievement Award 2008’
Aims / Objectives
The ‘Technology Education Student Achievement Award 2008’ aims to recognise the performance of students in realising the aims of education and goals of school curriculum through learning in Technology Education (TE).
Details
2. The Technology Education Good Practices Sharing Scheme (Scheme) is organised by the Technology Education Section, Curriculum Development Institute (CDI) of the Education Bureau with the support from tertiary institutions, professional bodies and organisations. The Scheme aims to recognise the achievement and contribution of schools in the Technology Education Key Learning Area (TEKLA). In 2008, the Scheme’s highlight is to appreciate students’ performance in leaning in TEKLA and the ‘Technology Education Student Achievement Award 2008’ will be honoured to students with best performance.
3. All full time secondary schools in Hong Kong are invited to nominate their students, on individual or team basis, to participate in the ‘Technology Education Student Achievement Award 2008’. Nominated students (or teams) are required to submit a report of their work or project accomplished in an individual single subject or across subjects in the TEKLA between September 2006 and July 2008. The best twenty students (or teams) will be invited to present their works or projects in the ‘Technology Education Student Achievement Exhibition’ to be held from 27 October to 8 November 2008. Ten from the best twenty students (or teams) will be honoured the ‘Technology Education Student Achievement Award 2008’. For details, please refer to the attached Information Sheet (Appendix 4a).
4. Schools wishing to nominate their students to participate in the activity are requested to complete and return the Nomination Form in Appendix 4b by fax at 2768 8664 to the Technology Education Section on or before 11 April 2008 (Friday).

Information Sheet 1. Objectives
The ‘Technology Education Student Achievement Award 2008’ aims to:
• encourage students to reflect and consolidate their learning in Technology Education (TE);
• recognise the performance of students in TE in realising the aims of education and goals of school curriculum; and
• widen students’ horizons by seeing each other’s learning outcomes through exhibition.

• an essay, in 300 to 500 words, on the topic of ‘My learning experience of TE’ describing the process of undertaking the participating work or project and self-reflection on the learning experience; and
• evidence of their work or project such as texts (in either Chinese or English), videos, or artefacts.

The best 20 students (or teams) will be interviewed by the judging panel.

• All full time secondary schools in Hong Kong are eligible to nominate their students to participate.
• Students can be nominated on either individual or team basis. Each team shall comprise not more than four students.
• Each student cannot be nominated in more than one entry.
• Each school can nominate not more than 10 students/teams.
5. Adjudication and Assessment Criteria
A judging panel comprising academics, representatives of related professional bodies and organisations, professionals in the education sector and representatives of TE Section, CDI, EDB will be formed. The panel will assess the submitted reports according to the following criteria:
• Reflection on the TE learning experience (e.g. life-long learning, impact of technology, daily-life application);
• Understanding and application of the knowledge learnt in TE;
• Innovation and quality of works / projects; and
• Communication and presentation skills of students.
6. Awards
• Ten students/teams with best performance will be awarded the ‘Technology Education Student Achievement Award 2008’. At least 2 awards will be given to individual and team participants respectively.
• All awardees will receive certificates and commemorative plaques.
• All participants will receive a certificate of recognition.
7. Intellectual Property Rights
• All entries must be original and any infringement or misrepresentation of ownership will be disqualified.
• The Education Bureau retains the right to use all the submitted entries and in any forms for educational purposes.
