Part 1

John is reading a poem in the English Corner.

Read the poem.

Climbed a hill And got to the top

I walked around But nobody was found

On the way I saw them fighting Lots of feathers flying

Then nothing

I sat under a pine tree There was a lot to see The pond was as blue as the sky

And I jumped into it

As I put my bike away Dad turned to me to say,

“What did you do today?”

“Oh,” I said, “I played.”

Part 3

John is reading in the school library.

Read the following information.

HONG KONG PRIMARY SCHOOL

Dear Students,

On behalf of Hong Kong Primary School, I would like to give a very warm welcome to the following new teachers:

Maths Teacher

Mr Thomas Cheung joins our school to teach upper primary Maths this year. Mr Cheung has just finished his studies, and it is his first year of teaching. He is the class teacher of 5C. Besides teaching Maths, he will coach the football team after school. His hobby is going to concerts.

Native English-speaking Teacher (NET)

This year we have a new NET from England. Her name is Mrs Anita Lee. She has taught English for many years and will teach Primary 2, 3 and 6 English. As she does not understand Cantonese, she hopes that everyone will give her help and support. Mrs Lee will also teach a French class and a German class after school.

PE Teacher

Miss Cecilia Tang is our new PE teacher. She is very active and will coach the swimming and basketball teams. Miss Tang thinks students nowadays are less fit because they are too busy to exercise. After teaching for several years, Miss Tang still thinks the best part of her job is working with children. “Every child is unique and has his or her own needs.”

Best wishes to our new staff in the new school year!

John is reading in the library.

Read the following text.

Are You Fit?

People these days like to look thin because it is a sign of beauty. Looking thin, however, does not always mean you are healthy.

A healthy person is someone who has a healthy heart. Most people know that eating more fruit and vegetables and less fast food will keep your heart healthy. But fewer people know that exercise is also important for your heart.

A study shows that 59% of adults in Hong Kong do not exercise regularly, and primary school children are some of the least active students in the world (see Figure 1).

Why don’t children do more exercise?

They say they are occupied with homework, and in their spare time, they would rather play on the computer (see Figure 2).

Another reason why children do not exercise is that there are few lessons of PE, while schools in other countries have PE lessons every day. Primary schools in Hong Kong only have two PE lessons per week. PE lessons are

Not enough people in Hong Kong exercise regularly. If they want to be healthy, they must find time to exercise.
