Chronic hepatitis C has a high prevalent rate in Taiwan. Current IFN-based therapy fails to eradicate virus from all the infected individuals, and is least effective for those who harbor genotype 1b Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), which is the predominant type found in Taiwan. Thus there is urgent need to improve anti-HCV therapies and discover novel therapeutic approaches in the form of new antiviral agents. Previous studies on Interferon (IFN)-ribavirin combined treatment and some herbal medicines such as Xiao Chai Hu Tang have linked their antiviral effects to immune modulation. In this study, we would like to demonstrate that Xiao Chai Hu Tang modulates host immune responses through the alteration of cytokine production profiles. Our preliminary results have demonstrated that the cytokine productions in Human Peripheral Blood Mononeucloid Cells (PBMCs) could be selectively regulated by Xiao Chai Hu Tang. By turning off the inflammation responses and in the same time promoting T-helper cells-1(Th-1) responses, Xiao Chai Hu Tang may help to alleviate symptoms of hepatitis. Some patients are resistant to IFN-α treatment, thus improving anti-HCV therapies and discovering novel therapeutic approaches in the form of new antiviral agents have acquired great urgency. However Xiao Chai Hu Tang did not show any repression effects on HCV replication ability. Recently, human hepatoma-derived Huh7 cell lines supporting

R) and Polysaccharides Enterprise (Shuang Hor Supreme LingzhiR), substantially inhibited HCV replication at 1 mg/ml in Huh7 human hepatoma cells containing an HCV subgenomic replicon. In addition, HCV-Huh7 cells treated with a combination of a low dose (10 IU/ml) of IFN- and 1 mg/ml of one of the four herbal extracts also exhibited significant inhibition of HCV replication. 自從我民國 88 年有幸考取中醫研究所博士班以來,求學與研究的 過程實可謂從千辛萬苦中一路披荊斬棘乃至於今;期間千祐與譯民的來 臨,上祐中醫診所成立,因為指導教授離開學校,以致休學三年,接腫 而至的是診所新建大樓施工與落成,因洪喬之誤導致博士論文投稿遭退 件,及至去年底因學校董事會為爭取全球五百大而決議修改畢業資格幾 乎使得我博士班的努力功敗垂成………….
