November 2, 2022

Mexico’s annual Day of the Dead festival kicked off in fine style yesterday. In the capital and __(1)__ the country, friends and families gathered for a two-day holiday unlike any other. My breath was taken away as I __(2)__ this amazing golden structure. I believe I could have spent all my time in Kyoto just __(3)__ at Kinkaku-ji.

Another unforgettable experience in Kyoto was the first time I saw the city’s __(4)__ geishas. No journey to Kyoto is complete __(5)__ seeing one of these beautiful women perform Japan’s traditional kyomai dance.

In conclusion, I never truly fell in love with a city until I went to Kyoto. One day I shall return to this magical city, which offers a perfect mixture of culture and natural beauty.

In addition to rocks, they feature elements such as water, small trees, and sand or pebbles, all of which are positioned in a very __(2)__ manner. Japanese people __(3)__ rock gardens when these were first created in Kyoto several hundred years ago. Probably Japan’s most famous rock garden is the one located on the grounds of Ryoan-ji, a Zen* temple in the northwestern part of Kyoto. No trip to Kyoto would be complete

8. For most Mexicans, no other holiday compares to the Day of the Dead. A highlight on

the calendar, this holiday is widely recognized __(1)__ by far the country’s most important festival. For two days in early November, the entire nation springs to life as locals dance, dine, and dress up to mark this special __(2)__. Locals and tourists alike travel great distances to be a part of it, and many often start preparing weeks, if not months, __(3)__. A major symbol of the Day of the Dead is el flor del muerto, or “the flower of the dead.” This flower is otherwise known as the Cempazuchitl or Mexican marigold*, a

flower native to the country. __(4)__ and bright yellow, it has been used for centuries to decorate homes and graves during the yearly festival and certainly adds a splash of color to the surprisingly lively affair. The Cempazuchitl is also believed __(5)__ a symbol of both the sun and rebirth. All in all, it’s the perfect flower to guide ghostly guests back to earth for Mexico’s greatest party!

9. The story of Albrecht and Albert Dürer can teach us a lot about relationships between

brothers and sisters. When the two brothers were young men, both wanted to travel to Nuremberg to study at an art __(1)__ there. However, their parents only had enough money to send __(2)__ to the school. Albrecht traveled to Nuremberg alone, and Albert

consequently became a man __(3)__ at a manual labor job to help pay for his brother’s studies.

This story is an example of an individual being able to __(4)__ his brother. The story is therefore very special because young siblings are often highly competitive. Competition between siblings can start as early as when a family’s second child is born and may

continue throughout both siblings’ childhood. __(5)__, such competition can be stressful for both siblings and parents.

By contrast, a healthy sibling relationship such as that between the Dürer brothers can help to strengthen family ties. In addition, maintaining friendlier terms with a sibling can help both siblings to enjoy a happier and healthier life.

11. Japan has many unique cultural features. For example, you may be surprised by the

number of rules related to shoes that local people can __(1)__. Specifically, there are clear expectations about when to remove one’s outdoor shoes; doing so is not only important when visiting someone’s home but also expected at many public places.

If you’re not sure when to remove your outdoor shoes, keeping this one simple rule in mind should help: shoes should only be worn __(2)__ the first step into the house. The genkan* is a building or room’s __(3)__ section. Usually, a genkan __(4)__ people’s shoes and ends with a single raised step that signals the beginning of the main part of the building in question*. Remember to remove your outdoor shoes before you walk onto this raised step. __(5)__, Japanese people will expect you to turn your shoes around to face back toward the door. 12. According to The American Journal of Psychiatry*, the quality of the relationships

people have with their siblings is a strong predictor* of the relationships they will have when older. That is, forming a close bond with a sibling during childhood is not an effort made __(1)__. On the contrary, the effort __(2)__ could make you happier later in life. Because most people grow up with their siblings __(3)__ the same roof, they share many experiences with each other. Therefore, siblings may be able to offer vital emotional support to one another throughout their lives.

Unfortunately, negative feelings can sometimes emerge between siblings, such as beliefs that one is treated better than the other by their parents, and sibling relationships can become tense __(4)__. In fact, for many sibling pairs, it is not until they reach adulthood* __(5)__ they become good friends. Adults hoping to maintain good relationships with their siblings should try to forgive any immature behavior from childhood. To do this, adult siblings should be able to talk about painful childhood experiences. Such discussions can help siblings understand each other’s pain and move on as friends.

13. If you’ve ever traveled to Mexico in early November, you probably know a little about

what the locals call Día de los Muertos. For those who would rather __(1)__ the English than __(1)__ its Spanish name, this huge holiday is also commonly known as the Day of the Dead.

__(2)__ perhaps the most important part of the Mexican calendar, the Day of the Dead is a 48-hour festival unlike any other. Families come together, houses and graves are

decorated, fine foods are shared, and crowds of people take to the streets to sing and dance __(3)__ the sun comes up.

Of course, all of this is done __(4)__ the event’s special guests, namely the ghosts or souls of the dead. To many locals, the dead are best represented by the monarch butterflies* that travel all the way from Canada just to be in Mexico for the festival, too! The __(5)__ of large groups of these colorful visitors after their 3000-km journey is thus widely celebrated in many areas of the country. To insect-loving Mexicans everywhere, these butterflies are the life and soul of the party!

14. The Day of the Dead is undoubtedly Mexico’s most important festival. No holiday is

celebrated __(1)__ the nation with such passion and pleasure. As a time to both pay one’s respects to the dead and celebrate life, this holiday is easily the most eagerly __(2)__ event of the year.

Though the Day of the Dead has been a regular feature on the local calendar for centuries, its actual roots are thought __(3)__ all the way back to the time of the native Aztecs*. The festival is thus as much a part of Mexican culture as temples and tortillas*. To know just __(4)__ important the Day of the Dead is to the people of Mexico, you only need to travel there in early November to see the grand celebrations for yourself.

There is, however, yet another reason why this old tradition is unlikely to __(5)__; many locals believe that not honoring the dead properly during the Day of the Dead will anger their departed souls and bring terrible luck. Failing to celebrate, therefore, could lead to financial losses, family fights, or even death. This is just another good reason, you might say, to join the party!

15. Let’s face it—children don’t always get along. For many of us, __(1)__ we become

parents __(1)__ we fully realize this fact. For instance, some siblings feel that they must compete with one another, and problems in their relationships often arise __(2)__. This competition may concern their __(3)__ and achievements or their parents’ attention. Luckily, several __(4)__ strategies can be employed* to promote friendlier relationships between your kids.

1. Treat your children as people __(5)__ are unique. For example, when buying gifts for them, try getting each of them something that appeals to their individual interests rather than buying the same gift for everyone.

2. Try to avoid talking about how your children differ in front of them. __(6)__, don’t use language that suggests you are comparing their abilities. When one child does something good, focus purely on expressing __(7)__ for his or her good performance.

3. __(8)__ your children to settle their own disputes: If you see them fighting, try not to get involved. If fortune __(9)__ you, they will be able to resolve their differences

independently.

Remember that conflicts between siblings may stem from __(10)__ competition __(10)__ the suggestion of competition. By eliminating* any such suggestion, you can enable your children to be the best of friends.

16. Last week, I received a special email. Maria, my Mexican classmate, invited me

__(1)__ her for the annual Day of the Dead celebrations in her hometown of Capulalpam de Méndez.

I’ve always been fascinated by this unique festival, so naturally, I jumped at the chance to __(2)__ her on her trip home. I knew the festival would involve costumes, fine food, and all-night parties—all __(3)__ the deceased of course—and therefore would be a perfect way to experience some authentic Mexican culture.

In addition, __(4)__ Capulalpam de Méndez may be a tiny southern settlement hidden away in the Sierra Madre mountains, it’s also a very special place. It has existed for over 1200 years, and locals officially recognize the village __(5)__ one of Mexico’s so-called

Magical Towns. Thus, not surprisingly, it is thought __(6)__ one of the country’s best venues for celebrating the Day of the Dead.

Finally, I also __(7)__ the thought of a small-town celebration to any other type of celebration. The full image of Dürer’s apostle was the subject of an __(3)__ triptych. A triptych is a work of art __(4)__ three panels positioned next to one another. However, Dürer’s efforts were not __(10)__. Today, Praying Hands, believed to be a sketch of the hands of the apostle in the triptych, is on display at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Austria.
