HKUST Symposium

on Traditional Chinese Medicine

Ways to develop a regional industry in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) will be explored during a symposium at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 27 to 29 May 1997. Among the symposium's invited speakers and guests are prominent researchers and senior government officials from Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, including: Prof Zhong Cong from the State

Administration of TCM, Prof Jian-Qiang Zou of the State Science and Technology Commission, Prof Cai Cao and Prof Shining Yang of the Ministry of Health and Mr Anthony W.K. Chan from Hong Kong's Department of Health.

The three-day symposium will cover: conservation and exploitation of materials, safety issues, research and development, good

manufacturing practices and manufacturing technology.

"Representatives from major pharmaceutical companies will also be on hand to share their findings and views on the future development of TCM," says Dr Chun-tao Che, Director of the TCM Safety Information Center at HKUST. "We anticipate that 100

representatives from the academic, industrial and commercial sectors will join the event."

Prof Otto Lin, Vice-President for Research and Development at HKUST, Ms Annie Tang, Deputy-Director General of the Industry Department, Mr Xin-Qiao Weng of the New China News Agency, and Mr Yuk-lam Lo, Chairman of the Biotechnology Committee of the Industry and Technology Development Council, will be guests of honor at the opening ceremony.

The symposium has been organized by HKUST's Biotechnology Research Institute and TCM Safety Information Center, in collaboration with the HK Patent Medicine Manufacturers' Association Limited, HK & Kln Chinese Medicine Merchants Association Limited and the HK Medicine Dealers' Guild.
